Recaro Exo Platinum review: one of the best gaming chairs on the market

Many have heard of Recaro because of the car seats found in sports and competition cars for more than 50 years, but also since the 1990s in some high-end and more mainstream models . With this skill and looking at a seat market play in full expansion recently, the manufacturer hastened to break his Exo, Exo FX and Platinum for the top of the range, as well as Rae for cheaper models.

We tested the Exo Platinum for several weeks to give you a complete analysis of this chair, which offers many features. Made in Germany with only materials from the country and Europe, this armchair is shown at an ultra premium price and it appears at the time of writing these lines around 1100 € (with a recommended price of 1249 € ). That’s the cost of an excellent ergonomic chair – we’re thinking of the Hermann Miller, for example – and that’s more than competitors in the industry. play, whose prices reach 500-700 € for the most expensive. Remember, however, that the latter make their models in China.

Is the Exo Platinum state of the art in build quality, comfort and ergonomics? This is what we want to verify.

For assembly, nothing could be simpler: the chair is supplied pre-assembled (hence the size of the delivery box) and all you have to do is screw the armrests using the provided Allen key , then fit the casters to the star leg. fitting it to the pneumatic cylinder under the seat. It takes a lot of force to get the wheels in, but assembly only takes a few minutes per the brand’s instructional videos.

It’s hard to fault Recaro in terms of build quality, as the materials used and the finishes are of good quality. FYI, our model is completely black, but it is possible to choose for different colors of fabric and shell (grey, white, blue, yellow, etc.). The entire seat and backrest is in fabric, which breathes better than leather or imitation leather, and has “mesh” fabric on the sides. Supposedly more airy, in the end we have less contact with these parts, but it gives the Exo Platinum a much more aesthetic that we cannot find in the Exo and Exo FX models.

Another main element of the seat remains hard and solid plastic for the back shell and part of the armrests. However, we note the chromed aluminum parts of the armrests and the entire leg of the chair, which gives a premium touch throughout and allows the Exo Platinum to be easily integrated into an office environment without stereotypes. gamer.

So the “luxury” side of the armchair is recognized in the small details, which can still be seen in the intricate design of the five two-tone, hollow casters. They are suitable for hard floors and carpets, but they are criticized for not being perfectly liquid on soft ground. Frankly, it’s not embarrassing if you move a little in front of your desk, but you’ll find it difficult to drag yourself a few meters to get something or for possible chair races between colleagues.

Ergonomics

Recaro didn’t have to look for the Exo Platinum design since, like most of the seats. play, it highlighted the curves of the “bucket” seats in the automotive world. The main difference is in the office equipment of the chair, which is first of all the adjustment of the height of the chair from 49 cm to 59 cm. The chair is also designed for people from 1.50 m to 1.85 m, and is therefore not really recommended for larger sizes. The maximum load supported is 150 kg.

You can also adjust the inclination of the seat, by leaving the rocker free – with a hardness adjustment – or by locking it all in four pre-set positions. Recaro calls them “offensive” mode (leans slightly forward and suitable for sports), “concentration” (back straight for most situations at work, play), “relaxed” (slight back for playing with a controller or watching a movie, for example. ), and “recharging” (leaning back for a little good-night sleep).

Obliging the car brand, the adjustment of the inclination of the backrest is not done with a lever like most seats play, but using the side knobs found on the car seat. This gives a slight advantage because the angle can be precisely adjusted.

The curve of the backrest forms an S with integrated lumbar support, but it is not adjustable in height or depth. Too bad for such a high-end model, but we have to admit that for ergonomics and practicality, we always leave the lumbar adjustment pushed to the maximum in armchairs if possible, without changing it afterwards .

Another irritating element, the headrest is sold as an option for 99 € and, if it is comfortable, we expect to see it provided by the Exo Platinum given its price. Recaro is trying to catch up with a promotional offer at the time of writing, the headrest is provided, but its duration is likely to be limited. Note that this accessory is not essential and that ergonomics experts even recommend not installing one to allow the neck to tilt as it wants and avoid any stiffness in the long run. However, it can be practical in the resting position, for example.

Certain armrests

The “5D” armrests are probably the best we’ve tested so far. They can be placed at almost any angle imaginable. No need to press a button to move them back and forth or rotate them 360 °, just slide them and the system is done smoothly. Otherwise, you can manage the distance by pressing the button below to bring the armrests closer or further away from the body – obviously you can adjust their height by pressing the button on the side. If we thought at first that the 5Ds would be gadgets compared to the already complete 4D of the competition, we actually use them often to adapt to the millimeter and have the most comfortable position possible according to the use (tightened by office automation, more wide to play. on the keyboard, in addition to the joystick for example). This freedom will finally be appreciated.
