Interesting God of War games (13/20)
God of War: Ascension (PS3, 2013)
We start this ranking of games in the God of War saga with a very special episode: God of War: Ascension. After the box of God of War III that came to complete the story of Kratos in the world of Greek mythology in an epic way, the Santa Monica Studio teams are directly following a new episode, but this season has the form of a prequel. So this episode shows a younger Kratos who, for his first adventure, will take revenge on the Erinyes. who tortured him after he broke his pact with Ares, who even manipulated him into killing his family. In terms of gameplay, we find all the elements that make the series attractive but without major novelties because the Blades of Chaos are the only weapons available. Apart from that, we can count on multiplayer as a new feature. However, Ascension is hardly second best in importance to God of War III, and its overly clever adventure has often seen it as the franchise’s poor duck. Still, it’s an excellent beat’em up that can rely on the solid foundation of its elders. But in the face of mixed critical and popular reception, Santa Monica Studios will rethink the formula for God of War to deliver the 2018 episode that we will talk about later.

God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP, 2008)
After the success of the first God of War on PS2 in 2005, Ready at Dawn (The Order: 1886, Daxter) went to see the teams in Santa Monica to suggest that they make an episode on PSP, the newly released Sony’s portable console. Thus, Chains of Olympus arrived a year after God of War was second in name and offered a breathtaking adventure for a nomadic support. This installment takes place between Ascension and the first game in 2005, and we follow as usual Kratos who works in the service of the gods of Olympus and must end the conquering wills of Morpheus and Persephone. In terms of gameplay, Ready at Dawn manages a little success in adapting the gameplay of PS2 games to the PSP, which however has fewer buttons than a Dualshock 2 controller. As a result, we have the right to one of the most beautiful titles on the machine, praised by critics and players, to the point of being the seventh best-selling console title. A first successful attempt at PSP, although it was a less ambitious experience than Divine Retribution.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP, 2010)
After the success of Chains of Olympus, Ready at Dawn decided to immediately follow up with a sequel, as long as the iron is hot. If the previous episode was a prequel, Ghost of Sparta takes place between the first two numbered games in the saga, but comes out the same year as God of War III, or even a few months later.. Which puts a significant pressure on the shoulders of the project. Despite everything, the latter was developed quickly, in almost 23 months, with the ambition to do better than its predecessor: longer, more epic and above all, more enemies on the screen to push the PSP at its limits. This time, while Kratos is still trying to calm his demons that are bothering him, he meets his mother who tells him that his brother is alive, which will lead him to descend into the realms of the dead to face the god. , Thanatos. An episode that is more epic than its predecessor, but once again suffers from comparisons to God of War III that was released some time ago. Despite everything, we are in front of one of the most beautiful console games, and simply one of the best experiences available on the machine.
The Amazing God of War Games (18/20)
God of War (PS2, 2005)
Released in 2005, the very first God of War caused the console gaming world to explode, providing an epic and awe-inspiring experience rarely seen at the time. During this time, we discover for the first time Kratos, this former Spartan captain who finds himself working under the orders of the gods of Olympus by force of circumstance. In this first episode, our hero is tasked by Athena to defeat Ares, the god of war, using Pandora’s box. In a series of flashbacks, we learn that Kratos is one of his servants and that he was betrayed by the god which caused him to kill his family. So, after a long search, the “Ghost of Sparta” killed Ares and became the new god of war. From the first episode, we found all the basics that will make the success of the series, which are the combinations that use the chaos blades, impressive boss fights, or even QTEs. It was enough to launch a saga that has now become a cult.
God of War II: Divine Retribution (PS2, 2007)
Building on the success of the first installment, Santa Monica immediately follows a sequel that promises to be even more epic and is well-destined to establish itself as one of the important PS2 titles. This time, as Kratos became the god of war, he was betrayed by Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, who stripped him of his divinity and killed him. After being saved by the titan Gaia, he is later told to seek out the Fates for revenge.. To provide a more amazing experience, this second stage offers four times more bosses than the previous game, but also magic attacks and new abilities to offer new options in combat. Result, God of War II: Divine Retribution is a real success, described as the swan song of PS2, due to its impressive confrontations and the shocking story of revenge. With this component, Santa Monica proves that God of War is an important PlayStation license, but also a big name in beat’em up.

God of War III (PS3, 2010)
God of War III is the conclusion of Kratos’ adventures in the world of Greek mythology, and what a conclusion. This time, It’s time for revenge for the ancient god of war who can count on the support of the Titans to face the gods of Olympus and take revenge after the betrayal of Zeus. After the first failed attempt, Kratos searches for Pandora’s box, the same thing he used to defeat Ares, to kill the king of the gods. Well, it’s clear, God of War III pushes all the sliders to the maximum to offer the third opus in the form of a masterful conclusion on all levels. Without much revelation, it suffers to evoke the final battle of Zeus to bring back the excellent memories of everyone who played the game at the time. Thus, this third episode offers an incredible conclusion to the adventures of Kratos, so the title is just one part of the pantheon of the best PS3 titles.
God of War: Ragnarok (PS4/PS5, 2022)
For the saga that took place in the world of the Olympian gods, Santa Monica decided to create a trilogy. But for Norse mythology, it’s a duology. Thus, God of War: Ragnarok is the conclusion of the adventures of Kratos and his son Atreus, introduced in the game in 2018. After the revelations of the previous game, our two heroes began to explore the nine kingdoms in search of answers, as Asgard, the domain of the gods, prepares for a prophetic battle. It must be said that Fimbulventr, the three-year winter that precedes Ragnarok, the end of the world in Norse mythology, is well in advance. In their quest, Kratos and Atreus must make choices between their salvation and that of the kingdoms.

God of War (PS4, 2018)
We conclude this overview with the soberly titled God of War of 2018 which, if there is a sequel to God of War III, takes the form of a gameplay reboot. Except for Greek mythology, this time Kratos transforms into the world of Norse mythology where he rebuilds a family, with his wife and son. Unfortunately, the latter died at the start of the game and the whole challenge of the adventure is to go and spread his ashes on the highest peak in the world, according to his wishes.. So the father and son will explore the different kingdoms of Nordic mythology to find this place, which will lead them to meet many characters, but also the gods of this pantheon. With this new beginning, God of War offers a more intimate adventure that revolves around the relationship between Kratos and Atreus, while not forgetting the epic moments that make the saga so beautiful, all with of stunning graphics for PS4. The title is also a revolution with a perfectly designed game, mainly thanks to the Leviathan ax, but also to the light-RPG aspect given by the armor statistics.
