Less than 6 months and already three boxes

In fact, we will not stop Fuji in this second half of 2022. In addition to the launches of optics here and there, the Japanese company sells the X-T5 in the third APS-C sensor box since June 2022. To speed up production, the company cheated a little by offering tools that are aesthetically very similar; in fact, only the sensor is different between X-H2S and X-H2. With the X-T5, we find ourselves – not surprisingly – in front of a case very close to the X-T4. And there is still no successor to the X-T30 in sight.

In the purest Fuji tradition

From the X-T4, it takes the curves and classic Fuji DNA, with more dials for a vintage-looking device. It also retains a dual SD card port (UHS-II), but lacks compatibility with CFexpress type B cards like the X-H2 (S). The viewfinder also inherits the definition of the X-T4 (3.69 Mpts), but slightly improves the magnification to 0.8x.

Rather featherweight

For the monitor, Fuji goes back to the time of the X-T3, by installing a tilting LCD screen of 1.84 Mpts. Amazing choice if the X-T4 has a screen on a ball joint. In fact, the X-T5, if it weren’t for its slightly deeper grip, looks like an X-T3. It is also almost more compact than the latter (129.5 x 91 x 63.8 mm) and with its 557 g, it is 50 g lighter than the X-T4. Wise choice.

A disguised X-H2

The Fujifilm X-T5 also inherits the latest developments made in the XH series. Thus, the sensor (still maintained in five axes) is now the 40.2 Mpx X-Trans BSI CMOS 5 HR, combined with the X-Processor 5 CPU, which is also equipped with the X-H2 that we tested earlier in October 2022. In addition, in terms of photography functions, the X-T5 is actually a carbon copy of the X-H2.

It uses the same new-generation autofocus system, which we found to be efficient. It also benefits from the fastest electronic shutter on the market, which can reach 1/180,000 s. Burst reaches 15 fps with mechanical shutter, 13 with electronic and even 20 fps with 1.29x yield.

8K was exchanged for 6.2K

If the photo functions are the same as the X-H2 – we think especially the 160 Mpx mode of pixel shift -, the video capabilities of the box however are not very advanced. Where the X-H2 offers 8K at 30 fps in Apple ProRes HQ 4:2:2, the X-T5 is “only” limited to 6.2K and 30 fps in 4:2:2 10 bits, All-In or Long- GOP internally (max. 360 Mbt/s)… but no ProRes on the horizon internally.

The micro-HDMI output (type D) makes it possible to get 6.2K in Apple ProRes Raw 12 bits or Blackmagic Raw. The limit of 29 consecutive minutes no longer applies, and the device can last about 90 minutes while filming at 6.2K before overheating.

Slow motion up to 240 fps and Full HD

For other formats, you can count on 4K UHD or DCI, in classic mode up to 60 fps or high quality (the latter is limited to 30 fps). For slow motion enthusiasts, you can go up to 240 fps in Full HD. Various logs are of course included.

Along with the launch of the X-T5, Fujifilm introduced a specially designed grip for the body, the MHG-XT5. No need to remove it to change the battery or the SD card. The base is also compatible with the Arca-Swiss quick attach system.

Price and availability

The Fujifilm X-T5 will be sold (in black or silver) from November 17, 2022 at a price of €1999, an increase of €200 compared to the launch price of the X-T4 in 2020. Two kits are available. The first, including the camera and the Fujinon XF 18-55mm F2.8 R LM OIS, will set you back €2399. The second, with the body and the Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR, will sell for 2499 €. The MHG-XT5 handle will be offered for 149 €.

Great competition

Inevitably, this X-T5 will find itself struggling with the X-H2 offering which is 250 € more expensive, but very similar. It is also a direct competition to its predecessor, the X-T4. Some 24×36 boxes can also be competitive under the 2000 € mark, such as the Sony Alpha 7C (A7C), which is not in the last place in terms of complexity, or the Panasonic Lumix S5, terrible for video. Finally, it is a rival of choice for the Canon EOS R7, which also has it under the hood.
