Corsair Voyager a1600 review: Corsair’s first laptop sails a flood of performance

building

The build quality of the aluminum chassis and the finishes are excellent. We appreciate the PC’s thin design, but don’t expect its company to go unnoticed, the aesthetics play which is part of it. We noticed that the screen is significantly raised with an open space between it and the chassis which may not be to everyone’s liking. However, it allows you to take advantage of a longer screen, which is good for the neck, and reveal the keys of the integrated Stream Deck when the cover is closed.

A whole line of touch shortcuts is located above the keyboard to access its favorite effects and features (eg live broadcast). Everything is clearly configurable in software ad hoc and this integration is very practical for not having to carry a separate Stream Deck. An interesting element that clearly distinguishes the Voyager a1600 from the competition, but it is not the only one.

The keyboard integrated in the PC is actually a mechanical model, which is very rare in a laptop (although there are some examples, in Aorus and Alienware in particular). It is adorned with Cherry MX switches ultra low profile and the quality of the keystroke is better and faster than the usual scissor switch. The keyboard is RGB backlit and the colors and various effects are adjustable by key in the iCue home software. Also note that the touchpad is large, which can be handy, but players usually use their mouse or a gamepad. There is also a fingerprint reader to the right of the keyboard.

The iCue software allows you to manage all the keyboard lights.

Connectivity is relatively provided by two USB4 ports, USB-A 3.1 port, USB-C 3.2 port, SD card reader and mini-jack socket. It is bad that the HDMI is not there, as is an Ethernet port for an optimal connection, but the 6E wifi and Bluetooth 5.2 are present. Corsair has also integrated its Slipstream technology into the PC, allowing the manufacturer’s compatible peripherals to connect without their USB receiver.

Connectivity is extensive, but lacks an Ethernet port and HDMI.

The webcam is compatible with Windows Hello to unlock the PC with facial recognition. It films in Full HD, which is a good point the first, but the quality is frankly disappointing, especially on a computer dedicated to creators and live streaming. Of course, experienced users may have dedicated hardware, but we have lost interest in a portable system, and given the price of the PC, we expect better…

When the 11 Phillips screws have been removed, we discover a replaceable M.2 SSD, which is also possible for the RAM hidden under the black plastics, as well as the battery if necessary.

The Voyager is thin, it has a problem with heat dissipation as we noticed 47.5°C in the center of the keyboard during full play. A high temperature (even if it is not dangerous) causes a significant noise, because we measured 50.4 dB in cyberpunk and 45 dB below CineBench. Silent mode reduces this value to 37.5 dB, still cyberpunk, but it is clear at the cost of performance. Ventilation is often triggered, even in office automation when silent mode is not active, which can be distracting in the long run.

Manifesting

For its Voyager a1600, Corsair spared no expense with an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS clocked at 3.3 GHz and 4.9 GHz in boost mode, a Radeon RX 6800M graphics card, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM and an SSD 2 TB . excellent results in applications and in games. Its CPU index of 146 is frankly good and it easily surpasses the Ryzen 7 5800H and the Intel Core i7 11800H, but does not reach the level of the Intel Core i7 12700H or 12900H. So the PC is able to deal with any required application task.

However, we will emphasize a big problem: at the time of writing these lines, and when the PC is unplugged, the processor is limited to a frequency of 400 MHz, which is not enough to use the computer in a fluid way, even in the office. We noticed excessive startup slowness and untimely slowdowns when browsing or opening applications. Obviously annoying if you want to use your PC for multimedia or play a game while walking. No problem was noticed when the computer was plugged into the mains, which in any case is mandatory to take advantage of the maximum performance of computing or gaming. The firstthis issue is believed to stem from an AMD driver and we will adjust testing if a fix is available in the next few days.

The M.2 SSD on the other hand offers excellent speed with an average of 5.2 GB/s for writing and 7 GB/s for reading.

Games

In gaming, the RX 6800 proves itself here. The PC is one of the best in our ranking in this area and is close to the performance of the RTX 3070Ti on the Asus Scar, a very thick PC, let’s remember.

The graphics are pushed to the max and in Full HD, it reaches 102 fps on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla120 fps at Black Ops Cold Waror even 57 fps at cyberpunk for example. the raytracing obviously has a big impact on performance, but AMD’s FSR technology allows it to do so.

At 2560 x 1600 pixels, it’s obviously more complicated for the GPU, but Assassin’s Creed exceeds the recommended 60 fps for good fluidity with an accurate 68 fps on ultra. To take advantage of the 240 Hz screen – important for FPS – you should settle for less demanding games, such as Apex, Be careful hope Counter-Strike.

Activity / Autonomy

For a 16-inch computer dedicated to gaming, Voyager cuts a good figure with 2.4 kg on the scale and dimensions of 356 x 287 x 20 mm. It’s thin enough to fit in a backpack, but requires the addition of a space-consuming 230 W charger.

The charger is bulky.

Just like any PC play, the autonomy is not the strong point of the Voyager a1600 which lasted almost 5 h 36 min in the playback of the Netflix video through the Chrome browser, the brightness set at 200 cd / m², the keyboard off, the headphones plugged in and the volume at 50%. Nothing gets away from a grip for long, but this PC is better than some of its competitors.

How does grading work?

For the first test, Corsair offers a very powerful Voyager a1600 PC with an impressive technical sheet. It has the originality of putting together a Stream Deck that is clearly used for streaming, but not only. Also, the mechanical keyboard is a real plus for fast and efficient typing. The screen shows true colors and a high refresh rate, but we blame the webcam for such poor quality, as well as the significant heating and ventilation that is activated frequently. At release, Voyager also had battery power performance issues that were hopefully quickly fixed with a new driver.
