our test of the new edition, with interesting new features

Equipped for the first time with cross-play, a technical feature that allows PS5 and Xbox Series users to compete online, the famous video game FIFA 23 arrived with strong arguments. Probably the best in years.

Last in the series before changing its name to EA Sports FC, FIFA 23 is perhaps the best in recent years. Available for everyone from September 30 on the main platforms, but can be played in advance with the premium Ultimate version or the various EA Play and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, the latest edition of the best-selling video game in France (1.59 million sales recorded for the 22nd of the calendar year 2021) offers undoubtedly the most interesting footballing sensations since FIFA 19. Especially since the changes in the game are accompanied of content additions, changes and technical changes that are very positive. Be careful though: RMC Sport took the game as part of its early access. It is possible that future updates (on the official launch date and later) will change some aspects of the game.

The best defense-attack balance in a long time

Do not be afraid to be confused when compared to FIFA 22. The difference is however felt from the first minute, because the inertia is further changed. And more than usual. But it’s a clever mix that succeeds: the players are equally heavy, but sudden changes of direction and strong acceleration remain possible.

Today’s defenders are better equipped against fast attackers. Arrows like Kylian Mbappé continue to do damage, of course, while dribbling and well-placed technical moves still hit the bull’s eye. But various changes have somewhat balanced these important issues for a football simulation: the automatic placement of defenders and the team block is more consistent; the duels are more physical and less violent, the interceptions are more (perhaps too few); Defenders can take advantage of new boosts (explosive and long). Regarding this last point: a strong template that takes a little time to reach his maximum speed can claim to catch up with a winger who experiences a decrease in speed after the first few meters of his sprint. But you have to be smart in directing the defensive run.

To compensate, the attack has benefited from a sometimes questionable level of goalkeepers and a marked improvement in the accuracy of headers. Watch out for corners and crosses. And then there are “Power Shots”, new super powerful shots that zoom the camera (the visual option is blocked) while the strike is armed. The result can be as disastrous as it is fantastic and unrealistic.

Women’s club and the new “collective” in FUT, are two other big new features

Beyond the future presence of the World Cup (men and women), FIFA 23 has two major innovations: the arrival of women’s clubs and the overhaul of the Ultimate Team “collective” system . For women’s clubs, the French championship is particularly evident. So it is no longer mandatory to take the French team to control Marie-Antoinette Katoto (Paris Saint-Germain) or Wendie Renard (Olympique Lyonnais), who are among the five highest rated female players in the game.

As for the profitable mode of FUT (the revenue of Electronic Arts is estimated at 1.6 billion euros in the financial year 2021), the way of creating teams has changed. Get rid of the green links between the cards, which limit the options. Now we go to the stars, which give many possibilities. Which ultimately forces you to rack your brain to get the right formula.

What you need to know about cross-play

For the first time in FIFA history, online matches can take place between a PlayStation 5 user and an Xbox Series S|X or PC user. However, cross-play is not yet complete: an Xbox One player can face players on PS4, but not on PS5. On the other hand, all Xbox and PlayStation users are grouped in the Ultimate Team transfer market.
