LFI and PS deputies boycott the Assembly football team to protest against the presence of the RN

They had their crampons ready. But, in the end, they changed their minds. On the eve of the charity football match – for the benefit of the fight against cyberbullying affecting children – between the National Assembly football team and a selection of former internationals (Sonny Anderson, Christian Karembeu, etc.), the deputies in France Insoumise has decided, according to our information, to boycott the game.

The reason: they protested against the presence, in their team, of the players labeled National Rally (Philippe Ballard, Julien Odoul, etc.). For the first time, in fact, representatives of soccer – including macronists, LR, socialists … – accepted representatives of the camp of Marine Le Pen in their ranks. The latter has so far been excluded from the National Assembly team. “The National Rally wants to make this match, which was originally dedicated to the service of a good cause, a political recovery objective, aiming to prove its alleged “normalization”, justifying the LFI in a press release on Tuesday, which also announced the election. the officials will directly finance the association. The international context, with the victory of Giorgia Meloni in Italy, is undoubtedly not alien to this change. “The lesson of what is happening in Italy is that if we ignore it, we are helping to raise the far right”, concluded Mathilde Panot, the president of the LFI group in the Assembly.

“We didn’t expect to have all these RN representatives in the football team”

This Wednesday, September 28, so we will not see on the lawn of the Émile Anthoine stadium in Paris, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, Éric Coquerel, Ugo Bernalicis, David Guiraud, and some others. Asked last week by Le Parisien – Today in France, the deputy LFI Éric Coquerel nevertheless confirmed his presence (as a central defender, he specified). “We did not expect to have all these representatives of the RN in the football team. We are hot to play, so we said yes, as usual, as in the last term. But the question about our participation arose when we know that there may be representatives of the RN,” we now whisper to the French rebel.

“The labels should stay on the shorts”

“I regret the instrumentalization and hostage taking of our event. By what right is such and such a player banned from participating according to his party? The labels should stay on the shorts,” reacted Renaissance MP Karl Olive, one of the three captains. A position opposed a few hours ago by the president of the Renaissance group in the Assembly, Aurore Bergé. He “forbids” most representatives from playing in the same team as the elected RNs, “because it creates a symbol that will turn against us”.

The presence of elected RNs also causes a cold sweat among the rest who are not. Initially, one of the three captains of the team, the socialite Marietta Karamanli, also confirmed her presence in Le Parisien. “I intend to be careful with my colleagues in the behavior of the players and careful that this participation is not a platform and that no offensive, discriminatory, racist or sexist words or behavior are made or carried out. There penalties like any other team,” he warned.

But finally, this Tuesday after the morning meeting, the PS group in the Assembly also followed its ally, Nupes. “No socialist representatives will participate tomorrow (Wednesday) in the football match of the French team of parliamentarians, announced the group in a press release. (…) This is the first time that the RN has been invited to participate in a match in French team in the National Assembly. We will also not participate in the next XV parliamentary rugby matches if the RN is present. The socialists and relevant representatives refuse this mockery of the extreme right”. Olivier Faure, the First Secretary of the Rose Party, even added: “Commonalisation will lead to alliances between the right and the extreme right as in Italy”.

In RN, MP Julien Odoul denounced “sad sectarianism” when “the cause is more important, for the children who are victims of cyberbullying. We are not at all surprised by the LFI”.

The co-captain of the team, the Renaissance MP Karl Olive regrets that “LFI instrumentalizes and takes the match hostage. This will make people talk about the Rassemblement national more”, he believes, when “we have the opportunity to offering a good image of the Assembly”.

This boycott is “crazy”, many other captain, LR Pierre-Henri Dumont. “This is a charity match” and “LFI did not say anything when they played the parliamentary XV with RN Louis Aliot”, he insisted, referring to the rugby team that sometimes brought together the deputy of the Seine -Saint-Denis Alexis Corbière and Mr Aliot, former MP for the Eastern Pyrenees, now mayor of Perpignan. Former socialist deputy Gisèle Biémouret co-chairs this XV.
