Why not pay less for subscriptions to streaming sites by sharing them?

Isabelle and Julien have created their accounts. Among their subscriptions to the platforms of streaming, like Netflix, of online music, like Deezer, not forgetting their Dropbox, and other digital newspapers… they spend more than 60 euros per month! That’s enough. Faced with high inflation, the young couple had to make choices to save money.

There is, however, a solution to pay less for subscriptions: share them in a split rate between co-subscribers. The practice, which has long been a national sport of total illegality, now has a recognized platform for it: Spliiit.

“Places” to share, such as carpooling

“With Spliiit, we’re changing the way subscriptions are carpooled”, explains the 20 minutes, Guillaume Lochard co-founder of Spliiit. Launched in 2019, the platform currently deals with 157 shared services in France. “The main areas of SVOD, music and video games”, explains Guillaume Lochard. But Spliiit also bundles subscriptions shared around software, such as Microsoft 365, or even meditation or yoga applications.

Currently, Spliiit has over 540,000 subscribers and more than 108,000 active subscriptions. “Thus it is possible to save 250 euros per year by sharing subscriptions to streaming video and audio and video games. But we have many consumers who save up to 600 euros per year,” said the co-founder of Spliiit.

Family accounts to share

How does it work? Only. The owner of a subscription with unused family profiles can offer them on the site. Disney+, OCS, Canal+ Series, FilmoTV… just select it from the suggested list. For example with a Premium Netflix subscription where it is possible to share three “seats” out of four. Spliiit is responsible for offering free spaces on its platform and pays 4.50 euros per space to the subscription owner. This is the subscription price divided by four. “On our side, a place is charged 5.08 euros to the co-subscriber. The difference of 58 cents is our margin”, specified Guillaume Lochard.

80% of services (AppleTV+, Spotify, Deezer, Le Monde, L’Equipe, etc.) are shared through simple email invitations set up on the platform. “There is no mixing of genres, everyone will connect with their own identifier. This system is evolving and makes it possible to have an individual and very private part,” assures Guillaume Lochard. Exception for Netflix, where the tag -he must share the username and password. “We added PIN codes for fellow users, which prevents people from knowing what we are looking at,” said the co-founder of Spliiit. So guaranteed the anonymity.

Disney + for 2.31 euros per month

Is this interesting? Yes, for subscription owners and their fellow subscribers. The latter can subscribe to a shared Netflix subscription for 5.08 euros per month; on Spotify for 2.98 euros; on YouTube Premium for 3.50 euros. Some examples: Disney+ can cost 2.31 euros, Nintendo Switch at 0.73 euros, or even iCloud from 0.88 euros per month. For a good reason, the amount of subscriptions can, according to the good will of the co-subscriber, be rounded up to the tenth of a cent or to a higher euro for the benefit of Emmaüs Connect, a partner of Spliiit, with the goal of financing training.

Major partner actors

Is it legal? Spliiit admits it. “In the beginning, the gray area seemed grayer than it is now”, agreed although Guillaume Lochard faced the emptiness that the idea of shared family subscription could be. “At the beginning of our activity, we were attacked by the big American players, who were condemned at their expense”. Now, Spliiit claims to have developed partnerships with them on the idea of out-of-home sharing. “There is a void in this question, especially for blended families, people who alternately live with each other, even students who no longer live with their parents”, interpreted Guillaume Lochard. “Netflix, which has raised its prices twice in two years, could have blocked some users from their IP address. But he didn’t.”

According to the co-founder of Spliiit, publishers “realized that we had cancellation rates that were lower than what they had”. Another argument put forward by Guillaume Lochard: “we have also shown that we are effective against piracy”.

Sharing two “seats” on Netflix for 9 euros / month

We register with Spliiit to “see”. Very well, the platform is very intuitive. The steps to share a subscription or get a partner subscription are simple, fast and fluid. At any time, we know what we pay when we want to subscribe, or what we earn when we own a subscription.

We offer two “places” to share our Netflix Premium subscription (paid 17.99 euros per month). The money returned to us if co-subscribers have subscribed to it (9 euros per month, or 108 euros per year!) will be blocked for 30 days in an escrow account at the Banque de France (time to check that .shared subscription is valid). If we wish to remove our offers, we must do so 30 days in advance. Associate subscribers may terminate their subscription at any time.

According to a survey conducted by Spliiit among its subscribers, 29% of people indicated that without co-subscription at a reduced price, they would access their service illegally. 37% determined they would abandon the service.

And, a sign of the times: 80% of the owners of the subscriptions that Spliiit forwarded to them to share confirmed that they would abandon certain services if they could not share them.
