1000 km with Jaguar E-Pace P200 Flexfuel, can you drive a luxury SUV cheaply?

Zapping Autonews Green Which new LPG car to buy in 2022?

What better honor for a motoring journalist than to test an English car the day after the death of Queen Elizabeth II? This is the question we asked ourselves on Friday September 9, 2022, when we went to Jaguar-Land Rover in Argenteuil (Val-d’Oise) to get a Jaguar E-Pace P200 Flexfuel. Yes, you read that right, this Jaguar model accepts bioethanol-E85. The promise, of course, is to combine the comfort and performance of a high-end SUV with low running costs, because at the time of writing these lines, the average price of E85 at service stations is set at more than 50. euro cents.

Everything is nice and clean in the parking lot, our E-Pace P200 Flexfuel causes a sensation. With its coupe appearance, this compact SUV, 4.40 meters long and 1.98 meters wide, looks great. Its design contrasts with the relatively smooth styling displayed by SUVs in general. Big on that gaping grille, the front face is impressive. The back shows a more sporty look, with these two large exhaust pipes dug into the shield. The Hakuba Silver livery is elegant. Once the general inspection is completed, we will take the road to Normandy, for a week at the wheel of this E-Pace that drinks Superethanol-E85.

Our test vehicle was full, and the on-board computer indicated approximately 450 kilometers. We had to cover about 350 of them to our destination, which was the small village of Rocheville, in the Cotentin (Manche). So we hit the highway directly to start this journey, easily using the adaptive cruise control. But not autonomous driving, because this E-Pace is unfortunately not equipped with it.

Handicapped because of its large rims and tires

E85 engine requires, consumption is high. This Jaguar E-Pace Flexfuel is especially heavy, with a weight of 1,847 kilos. And our test model is on glossy black 20-inch rims which, although they are very pretty, certainly increase consumption because they are shod with Pirelli P Zero 235/50 R20 tires. Result: even when driving very moderately with the regulator, it is difficult to go below 11 l/100 km. For the most part, when it comes to the N13, consumption figures are set between 10 and 10.5 l/100 km.

Despite some traffic jams around the conurbation of Caen, we reached our destination without much difficulty. After testing the highway along, across and across, now it’s time for the small local roads of the department and the streets of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin to finish refueling and see how many kilometers can be done you can travel with 57 liters in the tank. . In the first case, the consumption of this E-Pace Flexfuel is between 12 and 13 l/100 km, be careful and sometimes allow yourself some moments of pleasure.

He just wanted to increase the pace

With a 200 horsepower Ingenium 2.0 four-cylinder turbo unit under the hood, you might think this E-Pace Flexfuel lacks power. No! An E85-powered SUV is a crime. Quite sporty, even nervous, you want to press the right pedal to feel its more muscular acceleration. As promised in the manufacturer’s data, it shoots from 0 to 100 km / h in about 8.5 seconds. Let’s move on to the 48V hybridization announced by Jaguar, which is actually anecdotal. The on-board computer actually doesn’t even mention it.

Sitting at the wheel of this Jaguar E-Pace Flexfuel, in any case we are well installed and maintained, but the comfort of the suspension is strong. Even uphill some asperity legions of Norman roads. It is therefore a very versatile model, which knows how to distill a dose of pleasure when asked. Even in Comfort mode, the nine-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly. It is necessary to activate the Eco mode to prevent acceleration and control its consumption even more. However, there is no point in hoping to drop below the 10 l/100 km mark, unless you adopt pachydermic driving. Drivers looking for sportiness can activate manual mode and shift gears via paddles on the steering wheel.

€37 for a full tank, with a range of 450 kilometers

A few days after our arrival in the Channel, it was time to refuel to continue testing our E-Pace Flexfuel. The tank screams of hunger, and the on-board computer shows the remaining autonomy of approximately 30 kilometers. We’ve done the 410 since we borrowed the car, so that’s more or less what he told us. Head to the Super U service station in Bricquebec-en-Cotentin, which dispenses bioethanol-E85 at €0.65 per litre. That’s almost a full tank of € 37 for a top-of-the-range and imposing car, not really focused on saving fuel. The price seems ridiculous, at a time when without the help of the government, the price of fuel often exceeds the mark of 2 €. True, there are SUVs that run on E85 without consumption, but the pain of the E-Pace Flexfuel is largely offset by the price of refueling.

Once the tank is full, it’s in town that we continue to test this E-Pace Flexfuel. The SUV is great to use there, with its light steering and its straightforward acceleration that makes it possible to extricate itself from all situations. Despite the large size of the car, parking is easy thanks to the reversing camera. It clearly shows the direction of the E-Pace when reversing, unlike other competition models where countless lines make it difficult to read this image. That’s good, because the narrow rear window is almost useless.

Very selfish city model

Where the rub is on the level of consumption in urban areas. If we are not careful, the appetite of Jaguar E-Pace Flexfuel can increase. There are then delusional figures, such as 16 l / 100 km or even 23 l / 100 km in short city trips. In short, the machine is intended above all to go on the road in very satisfactory comfort, enjoying a plush interior. As was the case with the R-Dynamic SE trim of our test model, which retails for €62,511. The interior is quite unique, with an instrument panel that cleverly combines analog and digital as well as a dashboard covered in leather with white stitching. We can also see these same stitches on the leather seats.

The leather is also on the steering wheel, the gear lever and the central armrest that falls below the elbow. The headliner and pillars are covered in Alcantara, and the center console is in lacquered plastic. Well integrated, fluid and responsive, the 11.4-inch touch screen is very sensitive to fingerprints. The most manic have to resign themselves to cleaning it regularly. The rest of the cabin is marked by relatively narrow rear seats, which can accommodate tall people as long as you don’t travel for long hours. Jaguar clearly favors the trunk, whose loading volume varies between 601 liters in the normal position and 1,386 liters with the rear seats folded.

At the end of our test week, we were once again on the N13 and A13 motorway. We enter our destination in Paris in Waze via Apple CarPlay, and we go about 3h30 on the road. As for the outdoor journey, the E-Pace Flexfuel shows that it is more comfortable on the road. In quiet driving, we even manage to build an average consumption of 9.5 l/100 km. That’s when you take a coffee break before going on the highway. Then, at an average of 107 km/h, the consumption is more around 11.5 l/100 km. We have a good quarter of a tank left when we return the car, so we fill up the rest of the tank at the Esso station in Pont d’Argenteuil, which sells E85 for about 71 euro cents per liter . The pump shows €28.38, so traveling just under 1,000 kilometers in a Jaguar E-Pace Flexfuel will cost us around €65.

Our opinion

Affording an SUV for €62,511 while wanting to save money at the pump may seem strange. However, this is what the Jaguar E-Pace Flexfuel promises without lying. Powerful, comfortable and seriously sexy, this family model from across the Channel allows you to enjoy a luxurious and fast car without worrying about the price of a full tank. So sure, its autonomy is somewhat reduced and its consumption figures can be scary, especially in the city. But the ridiculously low price of E85 largely compensates for these small apartments, which are already removed from the joy of driving a car of this type.

In short

From Argenteuil to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, then the reverse, our journalist-tester tested the fuel consumption and autonomy of the Jaguar E-Pace P200 Flexfuel, whose E85 and hybrid engine would like to allow you to drive a luxury SUV without harming yourself. of the bomb.
