Like his brother, Gad Elmaleh is always inspired by this his family life and those who are close to him in writing his movies, Judith Elmaleh has based on his grandmother’s journey to write this novel. Many revelations were made on the set of RTL including painful family secrets. This first novel of the director tells the story of his grandmother who used to be forced to marry her uncle at the age of 14. “We live in a crazy family anyway”, stated the humorist Gad Elmaleh who began his explanation. “In other words, my grandfather, married to a woman, who said to her niece, ‘Come and marry my husband’“, entrusted the comedian for 51 years. “And for me, that first lady is my great-grandmother. No way! my grandmother’s aunt“, he added during his explanation. “If you have any questions, write us…”, Gad Elmaleh teased by insisting that the situation was clearly complicated.
Judith Elmaleh: “He doesn’t understand that the party is his wedding”
For her part, Judith Elmaleh, 53, is confident circumstances in the union of his grandmother, who was 14 years old, to his grandfather. “We put on her a beautiful garment, took him to a party. He loves this party. And at the end of this party, he said to his mom: ‘I want to go home, I’m a little tired'”explained the director before adding: “And he said to him, ‘No, you can’t come back and you stay.’ He remained there all his life. He is married, he did not understand that this party around him was his wedding“.
Still completely lost, the teenager is pregnant, just a few months after this famous party, reports migratory. “At that age, at that time in Morocco, we do not know his body, nor the human bodynor what happened to the secrets of their room”, continued Judith Elmaleh. He pointed out that his grandmother is his second wife since his husband already has a first wife who is none other than his aunt. The latter is older than her husband, she is 10 years old, can no longer have children.
Grandmother who is close to her grandchildren
In her steps, Judith explained how her grandmother was at the center of who she and her brother Gad Elmaleh were, emphasizing the freedom they had. “My grandmother told me something when I got married, for the first time. if you are not happy, you will be left“, he explained. “And this sentence remains anchored in my head. Not that I wanted to obey him, but he gave me permission, he gave me this freedom to do it. This freedom he doesn’t have“, he added. With great emotion, the writer confesses: “And I thank her, this woman, this queen for me. Becausehe gave us a lot of freedom. He was never free, but he gave us strength and freedom”.
Talking about the effect of her grandmother on her brother, Judith Elmaleh explained that their grandmother had the same effect on Gad Elmaleh. The comedian, he explained was his grandmother “a feminist before her time”. Gand Elmaleh said that when he came home from school, he once talked to his grandmother about when he was going to get married, he would marry a woman like his grandmother who “make dumplings, couscous, …”. Then his grandmother answered him: “you are looking for a wife or you are looking for an employee, you“. “It was a slap, she put me back in place, like stop, don’t talk about women like that. It’s a lesson in fact, that she gave us”, concluded the artist with emotion.
