Why this section? Because there are many new products this autumn, and you can certainly expect to see them all on our mini “Mondial de l’auto” site, where you usually find new models from all which are manufacturers.

However, many manufacturers have chosen not to attend this edition of the Paris Motor Show 2022, a certain number of new products will not be shown at the Porte de Versailles in Paris, and especially those presented in this article. To give you a complete vision and meet your expectations, however we chose to publish it on the Caradisiac mini-site dedicated to the Paris Motor Show, but in a special section “And in side of the Paris Motor Show Auto” .

If only one model had to be retained in the Mercedes-AMG range, it would be the C63. Since the C-Class of the W204 generation was launched in 2007, the brand’s star-studded vehicle has perfectly embodied the myth of AMG with its amazing V8 with its unforgettable rumbles and powerful character. In 2015, Mercedes abandoned the 6.2-liter naturally aspirated block in the W205 generation, switching to a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 like all other ultra-sporty models in the range. But that is nothing compared to what the wizard of Affalterbach has prepared for the AMG version of the new C-Class of the W206 generation, launched on the market in 2021. Facing the turbo inline six cylinder of the BMW M3 or of the V6 bi-turbo from the Audi RS 4, the new C63 S has a smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder!

We’ve known this for a few months, but it’s another thing to discover such a mechanism under the hood of a historic AMG icon. In terms of style, however, the recipe has not changed much compared to previous generations. Widened by 76 millimeters at the front compared to a normal C-Class, the car is equipped with the usual panoply of ultra-sporty German sedans. There are still two double tailpipes at the back in addition to a small trunk spoiler, several shields covering and specific 19-inch rims (20-inch optional). The atmosphere inside does not surprise the accustomed to the C-Class and Mercedes-AMG, with an interior full of sporty details and lined with seats with reinforced support.

So the revolution takes place under the hood with a row of cylinders small in the engine bay. Installed in a longitudinal position, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder is equipped for the first time with a turbo whose exhaust gas turbine is electrically assisted. A technique described by Mercedes-AMG as “inspired by Formula 1”, which makes it possible to improve the response of the engine as much as possible by minimizing the phenomenon of “lag”. With 476 horsepower (at 6,725 rpm), this block, significantly modified compared to the C43 and SL 43 (itself close to the A45 AMG), stands out as the most powerful four-cylinder of all . temperature. It has a starter-alternator and a 400-volt electrical system. Above all, it combines its power with another electric motor installed on the rear axle and develops a power of 204 horsepower (for a maximum of 10 seconds), forming the “P3 hybrid” powertrain developed by AMG engineers. The precision of 10 seconds seems important because the rest of the time, this electric motor is limited to 70 kW or 95 horsepower. Adding this gives us 571 permanently accumulated horsepower. Which remains an advantage compared to the 510 horsepower of the previous model (and the BMW M3 Competition).

Technology, there is a package in this Mercedes-AMG C63 that is adapted to the strong emission standards of the European Union. Also designed “thanks to the experience gained in Formula 1”, the small 6.1 kWh battery weighs 89 kilos and benefits from a direct cooling circuit, which allows it to permanently maintain the highest temperature which is 45 degrees even when driving. But there is no reason to reach WLTP records: the C63 S E-Performance can only travel 13 kilometers on 100% electricity and claim 6.9 liters/100 km and 156 g/km of WLTP CO2. That’s €2,370 in ecological penalty in 2023, instead of the €50,000 it would cost you with the V8. The car also has rear-wheel steering as standard, as well as an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Ah yes, it has become a four-wheel drive. For smoke lovers, there is even a Drift mode to change it to pure propulsion and play with the rear axle. The electric motor is paired with all-wheel drive and has two speeds (the second of which operates at a maximum of 140 km/h). The internal combustion engine is mated to a 9-speed Speedshift MCT multi-disc clutch rather than a dual-clutch gearbox.

The C63 S E-Performance will offer no less than eight different driving modes, from 100% electric position (“Electric”) to “Race” on the circuit through Comfort, “Battery Hold” (maintenance of charge battery ), Sport , Sport + or “Slippery” for driving on wet tarmac. AMG also promises a “typical AMG” sound…artificially amplified through the car’s speakers (sic). There remains a figure that hurts a little for a relatively compact ultra-sporty family sedan: the 2,111 kg listed on the technical sheet. 400 kilos more than the previous C63 AMG S and even 250 kg more than the Tesla Model 3 Electric Performance weighed down by its huge batteries! The performances are obviously improved (0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and 280 km/h electronically limited with the optional AMG Driver’s Package), but do not relax for an engine more powerful than the BMW M5 , an E63 S or an Audi RS 6 in the higher category. The maximum cumulative torque is announced at 1020 Nm! Well, all that remains is to test it to see how this amazing technical sheet is transcribed in terms of driving sensations. And check if the purists should worry about it…
