“I don’t have any weakness” said David Guion

No. I arrived in a dark climate, with a break between the club and its surroundings. It was a dangerous mission. With the time it takes to understand it, to know the workers and the urgency of the results, it is a difficult challenge. It taught me things, but I was the same.

Knowing this environment has saved time this season. I resorted, as in the last four months, to work, but this time to clarify things, my project with the players, my staff. We quickly agreed with the leaders of the desire to promote young people from the training center, managed by experienced players and men with an irreproachable state of mind. February, when I arrived, everything was done and I went straight to the point. Still need to adapt to the conditions but, there, I have time.

Aren’t you afraid of going back to the mess if the DNCG decisions of the past…

Aren’t you afraid of going back to chaos when DNCG decisions and then financial constraints forced you to review recruitment plans?

Of course, we were surprised. In June, the goal was to build quickly with experienced players. But all the difficulties made us stronger, along with the staff too. I brought people from outside. If they look, I have to show that the project can be done. As a leader, I have no weakness. Very early on, I understood that we must look for internal resources. I started the recovery of 14 players, I recalled 8 from the training center and we focused on working with them.

Are you more comfortable in this role of builder than firefighter?

I heard that comment. But we’ve seen other clubs take firemen and it doesn’t work.

“In L2, there are two main criteria: not having any injuries and having a good bank”

Since moving on, you’ve always mentioned the “game project”. Can you describe it?

In Bordeaux, we must win, but win with values. We worked on the strength, the defensive discipline of Josh (Maja) up front, all the way to the defenders. We worked hard in tight areas, where we won the ball back. Then, the project must be rejected with an environment that allows us to gain more ownership. For this, we work on a positional play, inside, to find unmarked men.

The good preparation of Josh (Maja) helped us: he was interesting in holding the ball. There was also the idea of putting Fransergio in a good mood. The explosion of Logan (Delaurier-Chaubet) is interesting. Finally, we suspect that up front we will need speed boys because imbalance, depth and athleticism are important in L2. Often in game time, defenses are not very coordinated.

We put that to music from the Vichy internship. For 11 days (July 4 to 13), young people work, without rest, without claims. We create the basics of the game and the state of mind. We left as such, despite being short pants in terms of value and knowing that we lacked players from the side and depth who were not qualified.

Statistics show that you are the 19th team in the number of crosses. Want it?

There are two reasons. Until the qualification of Clément (Michelin), we did not have a professional right side because Malcom (Bokele) is more of a central defender. On the left, Jacques (Ekomie) is so focused on the defensive aspect that he hasn’t been released enough. And generally, I use off-center players on reverse feet. These are tactical choices depending on the opponent. We will see with Vital (Nsimba) that there is more.

But we need to find more centers in the middle spaces, a little inside the box. We work a lot on them, but it requires calls from deep, that the midfielders plan themselves.

Do you have the impression that the team is already running at full speed or that it could improve?

The room for improvement is huge! They are not the same young people as they were three months ago, but there are still many aspects where we can do better: for example, this weekend, we worked with Malcom (Bokele) on the threes -way raise to find passing angles. , release Danylo (Ignatenko) and Tom (Lacoux). Dilane (Bakwa), who has experience, will do better. Tom (Lacoux) in an obscure job, understands tactical things but has 10-15 games behind him…

You imagine a 4-4-2 system with two real attackers, you fall into 4-3-3. Will you continue this system?

In L2, there are interesting things to do with both faces. that’s why I asked for an attacker of the leaders (Badji, editor’s note). The difficulty, for example at the weekend, is that when I start with 4-4-2, I no longer have offensive players on the bench. It is important to have innovation at the end of the game. The concern is the loss of Elis (now injured). In L2, there are two main criteria: there is no damage and there is a good bank. We have found a balance, we are slowly moving towards other systems, a 4-4-2 or with three central defenders. When you see Junior Mwanga’s performances, it calls out and you should look to integrate him into the eleven.

Does this mean he is now third in the hierarchy of central defenders?

No, he was tied…I would say that Stian (Gregersen) has grown. He is sharper than last year, more attentive to the coverage of his back. With the confidence he has now, there are goals we wouldn’t have had last season.

Why don’t you use Mwanga or Bakwa in the spring?

Because they are not ready! There are three months of work this summer! A young person, you should know when to throw it away. Dilane was not in the right psychological and tactical disposition. Mwanga, we found him and I took him at the end of the season to reward him. But if he explodes now, because he is well supervised by Stian and Yoann (Barbet), he will be in a climate of confidence. If I had played with him last year, I would have fried him.

“Last year, I was busy with many things. This year, I can delegate more”

Have you evolved in your management lately?

Last year, as much as I wanted to immerse myself, I took care of many, many things. This year, I can delegate more. Once I have given the staff goals, I can concentrate on the individual, the small corrections. It’s not a question of more trust in assistants, but if you choose men, you know.

Do you regret the way you fired your former deputies (Plasil and Coupet)?

I’m not good at timing, because of the uncertain situation at the club. The day of recovery, I was alone. Communication is an extra-sporting issue that is not my domain.

Was the selection of players sent to reserve during the summer your choice or were some imposed on you?

I assumed immediately and the club accepted me. I want to restart another human project and, immediately, separate the groups.

Do you understand the doubt about Fransergio’s presence in the eleven?

I agree with the fact that I expect more than efficiency. His carefree side makes you angry. But it also brings interesting things in terms of availability, the penultimate pass, tempo management, versatility. In a match like against Dijon, I need a player close to Josh to go forward and recover higher: he is there. He can be 10, then play 8 or 6. It gives me tactical diversity during a game.

Doesn’t he have a special status because of the club’s investment in him (4.5 million euros)?

No! The selections are made on the performance and the tactical data, which we have seen during the week.

Is your relationship with President Gérard Lopez and Technical Director Admar Lopes improving?

We have always been close. Our roles are well defined and I see that we are equal. The difficult off-season proved that everything is clear: there is no time for any misunderstandings. I have always had confidence in Admar’s work regarding the profiles of the recruits asked of him. He kept me informed about the cases. Same with the president.

“Success is putting football back at the heart of the project”

With these 17 points in 9 days, the combination of rookies, do you have the weapons to play the climb?

We have to include in the project Aliou (Badji), Zuriko (Davitashvili), see what Clément (Michelin) can bring us, without losing our stability, our dynamism. The five games between now and the World Cup break (November 19-December 20) should allow us to find the balance to keep moving forward, stay strong and be more efficient. The success of the last three months is to create the conditions to be ambitious and put football back at the heart of the project, internally and vis-à-vis externally. We must continue in this state of mind to be set before the last 10 days, the goal set by the leaders. No team will stand out like Toulouse last season and consistency will be decisive. There should be no holes.
