Renault Kangoo Blue dCi 115 (2022): almost no competition

In short
3rd generation
Ludospace
From €29,800

The third generation of Kangoo arrived on the market in 2021 with a reduced engine offer. Which are two petrol engines (TCe 100 and 130 hp) and one diesel (Blue dCi 95 hp). Little by little, the Diamond company is improving its catalog with the current Blue dCi 115 followed next year by an E-Tech version, 100% electric that offers a range of almost 300 km.

The Kangoo dCi 115 offers 20 hp more and benefits from an additional torque of 10 Nm, or 270 Nm in total. These values do not change the performance of the French MPV but improve the driving pleasure to leave with the family with the trunk full. Above all, it will be one of the most suitable for the 7-seater “Combispace Maxi” version expected for 2023.

This machine is exclusively available with a high “Techno” finish.
4.49 m long, the Kangoo will be joined next year by a 7-seater version of 4.91 m.

This very torquey engine runs out of steam less quickly than its younger brother. Above all, it offers better times when you are ready to play in the box, which is fortunately pleasant to handle. In reliefs or overtaking in the national, the driver sticks out his tongue a little. It also turns out to be a little elastic at high speeds, offering a nice range of use, especially thanks to its very tall sixth gear. In this road profile, we can see the significant work done on soundproofing, especially well filtered air and engine noise. The bluedCi 115 is also the only diesel compatible with the EDC automatic transmission for an additional €2,100.

Where this machine stands out is the very low level of consumption. During our test carried out on a mixed route – with, of course, only one passenger on board – we recorded an average of 5.7 l / 100 km. Let’s bet fully loaded, the Kangoo needs one more liter.

The interior of the Kangoo is modernized and if the furniture is made of hard plastics, it is decorated with inserts of faux wood and aluminum.

The MPV rocks modernity with automatic air conditioning and an induction smartphone charger.

In return, you should take out the checkbook because this version is the most expensive in the catalog so far with a starting price of €29,800 with the mechanical gearbox and €31,900 with the automatic gearbox. However, compared to most of its competitors (see the competition page), the Kangoo BluedCi remains inexpensive.

The BluedCi 115 is penalized with an ecological penalty in the range of €898 to €1,074 (CO2 rates vary depending on the equipment chosen). Note that the Kangoo BluedCi 115 is classified as Crit’Air 2, which in theory will prohibit you from accessing many ZFEs (low emission zones) including those of Greater Paris from 2024.

In terms of behavior, the arrival of the CMF platform, similar to Mégane (CMF-C/D) is a revealing sign: the damping offers a level of comfort that we are not used to seeing driving in a Kangoo. The dynamism is also improved, perhaps less, with a well-compensated direction and roll despite the high center of gravity. In this register a Volkswagen Caddy is better.

In the rear seats, passengers have legroom and have an aviation tablet, two USB ports and a lighter socket.

The Kangoo BluedCi 115 is sold only in the high-end “Techno” finish. For the occasion, it is decorated with the most beautiful tricks such as the chrome grille, the alloy rims (16” as standard), the dark-tinted windows or the fog lamps that surround. Above all the standard equipment that benefits from the standard automatic switching of the main beam headlights, reversing camera, front, rear and side parking assistance, hands-free card, dual-zone automatic air conditioning and navigation.

On the other hand, the fixed armrest does not have a natural position. Additionally, the amount of this savings is anecdotal.

With its shoebox shape, the Kangoo offers XXL volumes. The large and heavy tailgate is almost like a garage door. It gives access to 775 liters in a five seater configuration. Enough to load two children’s bikes without folding the seats.

With 700 liters in the base, the trunk can go up to 3,500 liters under the roof (once the bench seat is folded). The loading height can reach 2.70 m. Without a doubt, Kangoo is a mover.

If this is not enough, it is possible to fold the 2/3 1/3 back seat backrests to get an almost flat floor, a total volume of 1,200 liters (3,500 liters to the roof ) and above all a height of 1.86 m. Not only that, as an option (€250), the passenger seat can be folded. This equipment increases the loading height to 2.70 m.

When installed, passengers will face 2 USB ports, a cigarette lighter, an aviation tablet and a chaplain. They have a generous area at knee level and a high ceiling worthy of a cathedral, so Renault installed a nasturtium. However, we prefer Stellantis’ offering on the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Rifter and Opel Combo Life. There is also plenty of storage space (49 liters in total) including a very practical glove box placed in front of the steering wheel.
