Pablo Iglesias: “The policies are based on conservative…

she retired from political life in May 2021, after a heavy defeat in the Madrid region. Today, Pablo Iglesias, 43, co-founder in 2014 of the critical left party Podemos, has become a political analyst: he writes for the independent online newspaper Ctxt and hosts a podcast for on “counter-information” in another online media, Público, called La Base.

These new activities recall the beginnings of the political scientist in Madrid, who made his mark in a program of political debates, “La Tuerka”, in early 2010, before moving to the institutional arena. In a small book of interventions that he published these days in Madrid, a compilation of chronicles already published and interviews – for example by Noam Chomsky -, Pablo Iglesias settles the narratives of the Spanish media that he is accused of knowingly promoting a narrative that is harmful to Podemos, serving the political status quo and the monarchy.

In a long interview with Mediapart, the former number two of the Spanish government criticized the influence of mafia networks that mix politicians, civil servants and journalists in Spain, angry at the production of false evidence aimed at undermining Podemos and awakening the “tragedy” in the Italian election campaign. On a more personal level, he also explained why, if it were necessary to change everything from 2014, he would not “do it again[t] no”.

In your book, you criticize the “filth of the state”. What is it about?

Pablo Iglesias. These are the sectors of the state that reject the legality of the state in the name of political goals. The most obvious example in Spain is the LAGs [Groupes antiterroristes de libération, de 1983 à 1987 – ndlr]. This terrorist group is funded by the Ministry of the Interior, through earmarked funds – types of funds that many states have, and whose use they do not have to account for, when there are questions or audits before parliaments. In the case of the LAGs, the covert operations they carry out aim to kill ETA members, but also innocent people and civilians, who have nothing to do with ETA.

In recent years, we know the existence of various police organizations, led by members of the Ministry of the Interior, and even ministers of the People’s Party. [PP, droite – ndlr]. Here, the most obvious case is that of [Jorge] Fernandez Diaz [ministre de l’intérieur de Mariano Rajoy de 2011 à 2016 – ndlr].

He acted to suppress evidence or slow down the progress of investigations of interest to PP leaders and elected officials involved in corruption cases, including Mariano Rajoy, or to try to produce evidence against political parties. opponent of the government. In short, the use of the state, by asserting its own legality, to achieve illegitimate political goals.

The trial of retired former police commissioner José Manuel Villarejo, opened in the fall of 2021 in Madrid, and accused of corruption, money laundering and belonging to a criminal organization, was accompanied by the publication in the press of dozens of conversations recorded by Villarejo with politicians and journalists, between 2005 and 2017, and that he leaked.

The recordings made public by Villarejo, one of the leaders of these “cesspools”, document a key element of the functioning of these networks. A good part of their activity consists of supplying material, “files”, to the Spanish media, to damage reputations.

In the most terrible case, which concerns us directly, Villarejo was heard talking to one of the most important progressive journalists in the country, Antonio García Ferreras, the head of the left-wing television channel La Sexta. [et animateur depuis douze ans d’une émission quotidienne de débat politique à grande écoute, « Al Rojo Vivo » – ndlr].

During this exchange, Ferreras stated that he knew the information – according to which I should have held a bank account in a tax haven [les îles Grenadines] which should have been fed [à hauteur de 272 000 dollars] through [le président du Venezuela] Nicolas Maduro – lie. But despite this, he expressed this information [d’abord publiée par le site OK Diario en mai 2016 – ndlr] on his show, a month before the general election [de juin 2016].
