In its European version, the future Citroën C3 will have to wait until 2024.

Citroën’s best seller for ages, the C3 is an important model for the brand. Its current generation, which appeared in 2016, is six years old. So the Chevrons are actively working to replace it, whose development is not a long calm river. Initially, Carlos Tavares, the head of the Stellantis group, intended to offer the new Indian C3 worldwide, developed in large part by the Consulting branch of the Tata group. He also wants the Indian version to directly supply the European market. But Vincent Cobée, who became director of the brand in January 2020, was able to convince his superior that Europe does not have the same requirements. On the other hand, it was finally the Slovak area of Trnava (which produced the Citroën C3 and Peugeot 208) that was retained. Although “our” Citroën C3 responds to the same CC21 code as its Indian or Latin American counterparts and is part of the same “Smart Car” program, the engineers managed to change all its services upwards.

A small SUV look

The new C3 aimed for the Old Continent is entitled to specific front and rear faces.

This does not prevent this city car that has many points in common with the Brazilian version (see the video below), as Laurentis Barria, the director of marketing and communication of the manufacturer, recently confirmed: “We are inspired by this new C3 that we presented in Brazil to create the new European C3”. Aesthetically, the small SUV profile, C3 Aircross mode of reduction, will be the same. Like slightly more compact dimensions than the current one, with a height that falls below the mark of 4 m. Contrary to what one might think, the “made in Europe” version does not reflect a specific aesthetic. Only the front and back surfaces will be redesigned for the Old Continent. The most important change, however, was well hidden and decided only late. While Carlos Tavares pleaded for the use of the same types of steel as in India, the engineers realized, even without targeting 5 stars, that it would never meet crash test standards. in Europe. Especially since the GSR 2 regulations, which will apply to all private vehicles in July 2024, will include more stringent requirements in this area, in addition to the imposition of many new safety devices.

Cheaper than the 208 and Corsa

That’s why the whole structure of this new C3 needs to be checked. Which caused some delay. Therefore, while the presentation of this fourth generation, and the launch of its production, was initially expected for the spring of 2023, then in the fall, it will not happen before 2024. It must be said that Citroën has no room for error with of this vehicle, which must contain its new strategy. Together with Fiat, the brand is more responsible for ensuring the entry level of the Stellantis group. There is no question of walking in the flowers of Peugeot or Opel. The quest for storage is certainly not as far-fetched as the Indian or South American C3s, but the platform used in Europe is certainly the same but improved in terms of safety and performance. So it is a new simplified version of the CMP of the Peugeot 208 or Opel Corsa, which will allow this C3 2024 to present lower prices than its cousins. Also a way to compensate for the loss of the small C1, without direct replacement.

Citroën C3 third generation

The third generation of the C3 remains Citroën’s best seller. But the car is not young anymore, and technically it remains very close to the first Peugeot 208.

Two power for electric ë-C3

To play the card at an accessible price, the new C3 has certain mechanical elements. Thus, the 100% electric ë-C3 versions will not benefit from the new e-Motors engine (Nidec/PSA), which will land on the DS3, Jeep Avenger and restyled Peugeot e-208 from the start in 2023. Chinese blocks will be used, with tighter costs and more moderate power. The ë-C3 Eco will show a power of around 60 kW (82 hp), while the most “muscular” variant will go up to 80 kW (about 109 hp). Remember that the current e-208 and Corsa-e boast 100 kW/136 hp. The batteries will be supplied by Chinese Svolt (and not CATL), which is building two gigafactories in southern Germany. A location with the advantage of being relatively close to the Slovakian plant in Trnava. Two capacities are planned: 40 kWh for the Eco version and 50 kWh. In terms of thermal, on the other hand, there is only one possibility left for non-European versions: the three-cylinder gasoline 1.2 PureTech (in the current version of Generation 2). An engine that will be removed from the light hybridization because the project for a system in position P0 (in front of the engine) was abandoned in favor of the Punch Powertrain e-DCT, very expensive for Citroën, and must be related to the bag -ong 1.2 Generation 3 (with timing chain). To avoid damaging common CO emissions2which falls every year in stages, the brand will bet on the electric versions that Carlos Tavares intends to sell at the thermal price.
