At Audi, electrified models carry the name e-Tron. This concerns both plug-in hybrid cars and 100% electrics. The brand with rings started its offensive in 2018 with its e-Tron, a large SUV of almost 5 meters, then refused a coupe version then showed the e-Tron GT, a high-end sedan designed on the same platform as the Porsche Taycan. Technologically advanced cars, but very expensive due to their premium positioning. It will take 2021 for Audi to start downgrading it to products that are still electric, but not as expensive as this Q4. Although it is more accessible than its counterparts, the fact remains that its prices start from €50,000 and should still count €68,300 for our test model. We know more about democratization.
As its name suggests, the Q4 is an SUV. Measuring 4.59 m in length, this Q4 sits between the Q3 and Q5. Like most of the brand’s other SUVs, it is also available in a coupe version called the Q4 Sportback.
Today, we tried the “classic” version of the test. It presents a traditional look, but it is the front part that is most original with a large full grille surrounded by Matrix LED headlamps that can be personalized. The rear for its part is traversed by a light strip that connects the two lights.
In the passenger compartment, we discovered a horizontal board with 100% digital instrumentation and aerators running across the width. The multimedia screen measures 11.6 inches and this Q4 benefits from some specific features such as the double-flat steering wheel with illuminated touch buttons when the ignition is on, but also the floating console that frees up a lot of storage space.
Also good point for practical aspects. Passengers will enjoy more than enough leg room and head room. The icing on the cake, the floor is flat which makes it easy to use the center rear seat. Same observation for the trunk with a capacity that varies between 520 to 1,490 liters, a useful volume for the category.
The Q4 is marketed with three 100% electric engines. Their powers range from 204 hp for the 40 version to 299 hp for our test model, going through 245 for the 45 version, which is exclusively reserved for professionals. So the 50 is the most powerful, but above all, it is the only one that offers all-wheel drive. This difference in power is accompanied by a greater torque with a value of 460 Nm, enough to carry 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 s and to reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Numbers that allow you to travel with complete peace of mind. No matter what road network you’re on, there’s a tone there. Not enough to spoil this Q4, which shows a beautiful homogeneity. The four-wheel drive strengthens it in this area and allows it to have more versatility, especially for those who want to venture on slippery terrain like the mountains for example.
Passenger comfort is at an excellent level with excellent filtering of rolling noise, but also wind, regardless of the wheel, 21-inch wheels included, even if the 20-inch naturally offers a more certain outcome. Without being particularly dynamic due to particular one direction, with little consistency, while remaining precise, the Q4 offers great stability with perfectly controlled body movements. Finally, note that once in an electric model, the feeling of the brake pedal is natural, close to a thermal one.
Compared to some of these rivals, however, the Q4 stands out for its relatively comprehensive recovery system. It is thus equipped, like other models of the Volkswagen group, with a “Brake” mode that increases the change under braking, but above all, it has paddles behind the steering wheel to select the power of recovery of normal mode (D ). Three levels are available to you. As a result, thanks to all this, we have recorded an interesting balance sheet for consumption. Therefore, in our test, we noticed an average of 18.8 kWh / 100 km, enough to guarantee a range of more than 400 km.
In terms of charging, the Q4 has inherited a new development that allows it to receive charging powers of up to 135 kW of direct current. The charging time from 5 to 80% is reduced to 36 minutes. No AC change with 11 kW at maximum with a charging time of 7:30.
