Game News Assassin’s Creed Mirage: back to basics, Baghdad, Basim … the next game from Ubisoft has been revealed

First known as Assassin’s Creed Rift (rumors), Mirage is the next installment of the Ubisoft license. On the occasion of the Assassin’s Creed showcase, it was revealed to us in detail. This is what we need to remember, as a bonus, passages from our interview with Stéphane Boudon, Creative Director of the game (Ubisoft Bordeaux).

Infiltrating, parkour, killing: back to the basics

It’s no secret that the Assassin’s Creed license has changed a lot over the years. Since Origins, the Ubisoft franchise has wrapped itself in a huge RPG segment, all dissolved in massive open worlds. A new formula met by many detractors, eager to find Assassin’s Creed before. On the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of its license, Ubisoft thought it would be good to hear their call and give them a different stage, between the return to the basics and the modern: Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

the secret will be the main challenge of the game. … Fighting is always an option, on the other hand for us it is an option that is more difficult and the secret are always more valued than equities.

The title captures the three main pillars of the license initiation, viz infiltration (or secret), parkour and murders. So we are promised a game centered on these three axes that will take past elements while offering new features. Thus, we find the Black Box missions in Assassin’s Creed Unity, the corner cradle in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood or the eagle of the last opus (which was an Imperial Eagle). But the developers also gave us new killing animations, new interaction with the environment, different enemies and mechanics to make the movement more fluid, especially with a stick that allows you to cross more spaces between buildings. Note that Basim is agile and fast enough that he can do anything the weather is slow (Prince of Persia style?).

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is an action game secret and killing and therefore it is very important for us to have several ways to handle the situations of the different enemies we encounter. We have special enemies that sometimes come to challenge you on how to make your infiltration. In the presentation we talked about archers being able to shoot your falcon, but we also have other NPCs that don’t respond to the fact that you whistle or look for bales of hay with spikes to try to dislodge to you

The RPG part that has grown so much with the latest games will disappear. No more leveling and XP system, only tool repair is kept. It is not surprising because this is the only mechanism of its kind that has existed since the first Assassin’s Creed. As Stéphane Boudon taught us, it is the Moussa brothers to help Basim upgrade his weapons and tools, from his blowpipe to traps to bombs meant to distract enemies. Note that a tree allows you to choose different effects for each of your tools/weapons. If we want to see a bit of gameplay, the picture drawn is attractive to say the least and seems to skillfully balance between nostalgia and modernity.

Assassin’s Creed, especially Assassin’s Creed I, are games that are starting to age and whose gameplay is quite rigid. The chance we have can bring these old mechanics to the modern game. On the other hand, the pillars have never changed, it is always the secret, parkour and murder. It is this combination that works wonderfully that allows us to be very confident about the quality of the game that we will offer with Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Basim, the Alladin of Assassin’s Creed

It’s been a while since we heard in an opus centered on Basim Ibn Ishaq, the mysterious character of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The rumors are very true. But if Assassin’s Creed Mirage was formed recently, we don’t have much information about it. Tonight, we finally learned more about the history of this new title. This is about in one origin story of Basim, from his past as a vagabond on the streets of Baghdad to his rise through the ranks created by Bayek and Aya. At the same time, the young man suffers from bad visions and an internal struggle that he must overcome. understand who he really is and advance (those who have completed Valhalla already know what this is). Twenty years before the events of Valhalla, so we will help Basim find a place with this new brotherhood and destroy the Order of the Ancients, through a more linear adventure with a clear ending set in 860s Baghdad.

We aim to create a more compact game that focuses on Basim’s personal story.

Forget the giant open-world and total freedom of Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla. Assassin’s Creed Mirage returns to the structure and life span of the first ACs. Like Assassin’s Creed II, Unity and others, it is still possible to enjoy a little freedom, but the possibilities are less than in the last stages. However, Stéphane Boudon told us that the team still decided to keep some elements. Unlike the first games, the open-world of Assassin’s Creed Mirage will not reveal itself gradually, but completely from the beginning. What is found there is the same bit of freedom despite the more linear aspect of the title.

Find out that Basim is not the only important character in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Tonight’s event in particular highlights the one who will be his mentor in the game: Roshan. She is described to us as a strong and loyal woman, a former slave who is willing to do anything to protect her loved ones. And to represent it, Ubisoft is not affiliated with anyone. It is true that the actress of Iranian origin Shohreh Aghdashloo (Saddam’s house) to lend his unique voice to Roshan. Very proud to be involved in this project, he also wanted to send us a message during the Assassin’s Creed Showcase.

Baghdad, the city of all possibilities

If Shohreh Aghdashloo wants to participate in this project, it is mainly because Roshan’s background is similar to his. Assassin’s Creed Mirage finally brings us back to the Middle East. For a “back to basics” episode, we couldn’t have dreamed of a better context. In addition, Basim was chosen as the protagonist specifically because it allowed the developers to return to this region. However, you wouldn’t expect to find the same weather conditions. Times and places are not the same. Assassin’s Creed Mirage takes place before the first opus and takes us to Baghdad. We are now in 861 of the golden age of Islam. Baghdad was once an important cultural, commercial and intellectual center where people from all over the world gathered. In addition, its structure makes it a perfect playground for an assassin.

For parkour, the city of Baghdad offers us a dreamland with flat roofs, its different elevations and the density of buildings that were in this city at that time. All this allows us to have parkour highways that cross the city.

Assassin’s Creed obliges, a lot of work has gone into the reconstruction. This work is more important since the city of Baghdad was destroyed in 1258. There are no traces left of the city at that time. So the team had to conduct a lot of research with locals and historians and also took inspiration from neighboring towns like Sāmarrā. Of course we meet historical figures such as caliphs or rebel leaders of the time. No names have been released, but you can do your own little research if your curiosity is piqued.

Note that Badgad is not your only playground in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Like Basim, the players can too discover other places, such as the fortress of Alamut. If this name means nothing to you, it is a strong symbol. Alamut, according to legends, was the base of the brotherhood of the Assassins. For Stéphane Boudon, it is impossible to represent this region without starting from the side of the wall.

The moment was wonderful. We really need to highlight this to go and dig more into the history of the Assassins to see what happened between Bayek and AC I, how the Hidden became Assassins. For us, it is important to take advantage of this symbolic part of Alamut.

Note that while the Animus will often clothe Basim’s adventures, the focus is on his past history. A priori, the modern world must be restored. So don’t expect to see the plot about Abstergo and the Precursors progressing in this opus. Assassin’s Creed Mirage can be a separate episode, but that doesn’t take away its potential, which is already looking at a lot of players.

The fact that we succeeded in Assassin’s Creed Mirage in combining the two sides of the Assassins. On the one hand, the secret we have in old games with the pillars of parkour, killing and infiltration. On the other hand, the freedom part of this open city and this very easy game that we bring with the new formula. And there for me is the perfect synthesis and I am very proud of it.

Release date, price…

Currently, we don’t have a release date but a window. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released in the course of the year 2023. So we have to be patient to get our hands on the title. In the meantime, it is possible to pre-order the game. Know that doing this will allow you to have access to an exclusive release quest: The Forty Thieves. But for that, the game should still be available on your favorite platform.

Fortunately, the next AC will be launched in multiple mediums, viz PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series. Regarding prices, information is also provided. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available in three different editions: the classic for 50 €, the Deluxe for 60 € and the Collector for 120 €.
