The iPhone 14 arrives tonight: in the midst of a crisis of purchasing power, Apple will launch the most expensive smartphones in its history.

He can claim some or less honorary titles, the iPhone 14 that Apple will formally make in a few hours, in a keynote that will be held tonight at Apple Park.

First, this is the very first iPhone launched by Apple: an announcement on September 7 for sales from the 16th of the same month, Cupertino has never drawn an early calendar.

Second, and this is not so anecdotal: it is in fact, as feared, the most expensive iPhone range in history, 15 years ago, in headed mobile. While the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will offer, all in all, some major new features compared to their predecessor, the iPhone 13. Unlike the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max versions, which will prove to be one a little more generous and includes some hooks that will serve as a motivation to buy for loyal customers of the brand. On the other hand, no one can escape that the most expensive iPhones made since the launch of the iPhone 1 in 2007 fell in the middle of the economic crisis, a fortiori in Europe, where the purchasing power of the inhabitants of the Old Continent under terrible pressure.

Why is the price increasing?

So you read that right: the cheapest iPhone 14 costs less than € 1,000, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max, in its last version that combines 1 TB of storage (which really needs 1,000 GB of a phone?) . In addition to the intrinsic technological advances, the constraint is known: above all the economic and geopolitical context that explains the rise in prices.

The lack of ingredients, the meteoric increase in the cost of transportation and the consequences of the pandemic (still) in Asia have already contributed a lot to this additional cost. But the war in Ukraine, the inflation it worsens and, above all, the parity of the euro with the dollar that it has created forces Apple, for whom there is no question of cutting margins, to review its prices.

iPhone 14, 14 Pro, 14 Max and 14 Pro Max: the main new features to expect

To have something new in your iPhone 14, you must have the “Pro” particle that follows, in the model in question. The absence (reduction, rather) of the large notch (the famous “notch”) located above the screen is therefore reserved only for the Pro and Pro Max iterations. This is the only real change in the design of the menu, the iPhones appear in clothes similar to those of the iPhone 13.

Ditto for the new in-house A16 Bionic chip, which will only be available on the Pro models. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max run on the same A15 chip that powers the iPhone 13, but with some minor optimizations. It should be the same for the induction of “Always-On Display” functionality (screen always on, with a very low refresh rate to save battery), common in many Android competitors, but which remains one privilege on the iPhone 14 Pro.

The new selfie camera, on the other hand, will be available on all versions of the iPhone 14.

These factors push Apple to bet big on the busiest of its iPhone 14 in terms of sales forecasts: it is the iPhone 14 Pro Max, whose screen shipments reach 28% of the range according to analyst Ross Young, which raised Apple’s highest hopes.

Economic crisis or not, the forecasters are clear: Apple must break new shipping records with the range of Phone 14.

See you here, this Wednesday, September 7, from 7 pm, for the formalization of Apple.
