Everyone knows the Game of Thrones credits, or at least a few musical notes. The latter made their grand return in episode 2 of House of the Dragon, much to our delight. And the credits that accompany them are not only very aesthetic but also very informative. We tell you everything you need to remember.
- There are no credits in episode 1 of House of the Dragon
- A family tree made of fire and blood
There are no credits in episode 1 of House of the Dragon
Admitted by most of the public and the critics, the first episode of House of the Dragon however came with a shadow on the board: no opening credits. Must be satisfied with a simple visual before meeting Rhaenyra. A point that saddens the most nostalgic who hopes to find credits on the scale of Game of Thrones. It must be said that the latter has become a model of aesthetics for many others after him. This is why the showrunners of the series, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, want to assure the viewers:
It seems important to us, once the curtain is up, that there are credits that are a real pleasure. But first, we want to get to the heart of the matter, to start telling the story.
Everything is fine! Missing the credits is an artistic choice to lay the foundations of this new story faster. It is important for the showrunners to introduce this spin-off and its various plots before giving a credit worthy of the name. From episode 2, nostalgic fans were able to rediscover the iconic music of the Game of Thrones credits and its unique aesthetic, while others found the lack of novelty a real shame. But Dragon House is a different series, small changes should be the same. These new credits don’t say the same thing, though it tells a story and we will explain it to you in a moment now.
A family tree made of fire and blood
Like the generic of Game of Thrones, it’s a real history lesson waiting for you if you have the slightest interest in these short minutes. And since House of the Dragon focuses on the Targaryen bloodline, its credits do the same. Get a notebook and a pen, it’s time to delve into the past of the famous royal family of Westeros, and especially its family tree.
It was the Scourge of Valyria and Aegon I, also known as Aegon the Conqueror or Sire-Dragon, set the ball rolling. Capture of Westeros, unification of the Seven Kingdoms, foundation of Fort-Aegon (which would later become King’s Landing) and the Red Keep… His rise marked the beginning of the supremacy of his race (symbolized by the blood flowing in full credits. ) and the world of Westeros as we know it.
Then his descendants will come. Fathered by his two sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya, they split Aegon’s line into many bloodlines. But this that of Aenys I, descendant of Aegon the Conqueror, whom we follow until the arrival of his successor Jaehaerys I, directly related to his sister, Alysanne. Note that Maegor I, dit Le Cruel, is known to have been excluded, his reign with all the bad memory to be forgotten.
The line then split into several branches, thus symbolizing the more fertile union of the two Targaryens and their many children. But the two paths converge: to Alyssa and Baelon. No crown for the latter, but a hand, because if he was one of the many Hands of the King of his father, Jaehaerys, he died before he could enter the throne. A tragedy happened a serious succession problem. Problem that also serves as an introduction to the first episode of the House of the Dragon and which is symbolized by a real break in the bloody line of our credits.
From there, the natural path of the Targaryen line takes many detours to finally set its sights on Viserys I and his wife Aemma. The lineage then continues with an emblem you may recognize. It really brings Rhaenyra when she was named heir to the Iron Throne. As the only son of the king, he had to succeed his father. But another branch suggested another lineage for Viserys I, thus threatening Rhaenyra’s ascension to the throne. This is young Aegon, the result of his second union, with Alicent Hightower.
In any case, Rhaenyra’s line did not end there. He is the true ancestor of the Targaryens we know. As for who will give birth to it, we prefer to leave you the surprise if you don’t know. On the other hand, this line cannot be built without difficulty. After showing us Rhaenyra’s symbol, the credits tease us with a tragic event that will see the Targaryen family tear itself apart: the Dance of Dragons. An unprecedented war in succession that will involve not only the dragon family but other houses as seen in the credits: of Velaryon and Hightower.
Many of you know the outcome later, but for others the end credits give you a glimpse. It is in fire and blood that the families of ancient Valyria pass from the Golden Age to division. We naturally hope to see these credits changing events in House of the Dragon which promises to be full of twists and turns.
