High Performance Director Romain Barras spoke about the decisions made by the selection committee for the European Championships in Munich (Germany), which will be held from August 15 to 21.
After making the choice to take a tight selection of the world championships in Eugene, we want to start a new cycle from the European championships in Munich, with a larger selection that includes 101 you are athletes. This is a record for the French team in the history of this competition, since the largest collective started in Budapest 1998, with 97 selected. This competition will serve as the basis for the Budapest Worlds in 2023, then the Paris Olympics in 2024.
We want to open the selection to all athletes who qualify according to the criteria of European Athletics, if they have the ability to be in the top 24 in their event. For this reason, we rely on the level of races in the European top 24 in the summer 2022 report, taking into account the forces expected on D-Day. in competition, as well as athletes whose absence or withdrawal is already known. In competitions, where only 26 athletes can participate in each event, we only rely on the list of eligible athletes presented by European Athletics. Note that the French Elite 2022 outdoor champions will be automatically selected, regardless of their place in the continental balance, from the moment they qualify for European Athletics.
We had a difficult decision to make in the 110m hurdles. In addition to Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, invited as the reigning European champion, and Sasha Zhoya and Just Kwaou-Mathey, priority after their participation in the Eugene Worlds, there remains a fourth ticket that will be given to Wilhem Belocian or Aurel Manga , who is on waivers. Wilhem ran a 13”23 on April 30 in Jacksonville and Aurel a 13”29 on July 4 in Sotteville. Wilhem, injured in the hamstrings, missed the French championships, a competition in which Aurel took second place. Wilhem is still in the rehabilitation phase. According to our medical team, he is fit to race in Munich. But to be able to perform at the level we expect is something else. So we chose to pick Aurel based on his proven form in the last few weeks. We also want to protect Wilhem, both physically and mentally. We have a lot of confidence in him for next year, then the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
We chose Jules Pommery, Tom Campagne and Augustin Bey at length. Erwan Konaté is also qualified, based on his performance last year. But we rely on the balance of 2022 to make a choice. The international period for achieving the performance ends on July 26, so his result in the final of the U20 Worlds will not count. The fact that the return of the world championships from Cali is scheduled for August 9, with the jet lag to deal with and the departure from Munich three days later, also weighed in the balance. This is for us a dangerous sequence for an athlete who is still developing in the junior category, while three jumpers are ahead of him in the balance of the year during the selection committee.
Over 800m, we have to decide between Yanis Meziane and Hugo Houyez, credited with the same balance performance in 2022: 1’45”52. We consider direct confrontations between these two athletes, especially during the French championships in Caen, where the first named defeated the second in the final. In the 3000 m steeplechase, where there are many qualified athletes, we rely on the results of the summer, with the order Mehdi Belhadj, Louis Gilavert and Djilali Bedrani, these three athletes also got the first three places during the French championships.
Gilles Biron (minimum European Athletics) and Thomas Jordier (French champion and worthy of ranking) were selected individually. Loïc Prévot also qualified for the 400m, but he did not participate in the French championships for this distance, preferring to line up only for the 200m. However, our selection procedures clearly indicate that an athlete claiming selection must participate in the national meeting of the discipline in which he is seeking a place, and this is reminded to the people concerned by our specialist manager. We regret the selection of Loïc and his trainer during the French championships, but the methods of selection are known to all and must be respected to preserve fairness.
Hassan Chahdi has long decided to favor the world championships in Europe in Munich, and is in the recovery phase after his marathon in Eugene. On the injured side, Morhad Amdouni (10,000 m) unfortunately did not sufficiently recover from an injury to his left foot. Ditto for Rouguy Diallo (triple jump), who was injured during the French championships. Lolassonn Djouhan (disc) was recently injured during a bench press session, and was also forced to give up, like Fabrisio Saidy (4×400 m), victim of a grade 3 tear in his ischio-legs on the sidelines of the Eugene Worlds .
