How do you convince a player to sign? / Ligue 2 / Living my life on DS / Episode 8 / SOFOOT.com

Until September 1, the transfer window will punctuate the life of French clubs. Beyond the wild rumors, fantastic offers and fan fantasies, there is a truth that the leaders of the Ligue 2 teams agreed to tell us all summer. This Friday, Frédéric Hébert, sports director of Paris FC, describes his method of convincing a player to commit to his training.

  • Make the player feel like we know him better than he knows himself

“At Paris FC, we do not manage files in an emergency. The transfer window works well in advance, which means that there are long discussions, for many months, with the targeted player. If he shows interest , we will organize a tour of the facilities. This is all the more important as our training center (based on Orly, editor’s note) quality now, worthy of a Ligue 1 club. Then, the process very clear. I received the player in my office and we talked for two hours. I told him how we viewed him, relying on a scouting report, to reveal its strong points, its weak points, and many other elements that I cannot tell you too much. To illustrate my point, I also showed him a video compiling some of his actions. The important issue here is to make him understand that we know him well, as a player and as a person. For this, we do not hesitate to submit the motor preference exercises, which allow us to know different things on a human and physical level. This is part of the elements we put in place to convince target players to join us. »

“If we can raise the PFC to the elite, we know it will have a French, European and even global resonance. Our global project will excite the players, that’s for sure. » Frédéric Hébert, sporting director of Paris FC

  • Make the club project the best it can be

“Like all negotiations, the financial aspect occupies an important place. Inevitably, our salary proposals must suit the player if we want to imagine a common future. But more than financially, I saw that our recruits were very interested in the club project that we presented to them. It must be said that this project is extremely attractive: it is a question of making Paris FC the second Parisian club in Ligue 1. It historic and the players are obviously sensitive to it. If we manage to raise the PFC to the elite, we know it will have a French, European and even global resonance. Because Paris is the name of our club. It is a internationally recognized brand. Our global project excites the players, that’s for sure. The six players we recruited this summer are in demand by the big Ligu clubs e 2, even with other teams, sometimes even in Ligue 1. If they choose us despite this very strong competition, it is because we are attractive. Since I took office (January 2020, editor’s note), it rarely happened that we were not answered favorably. Once or twice, maybe. »

  • The coach, another great asset

“So my task is to improve this general project of the club. In a way, I offer the player a medium-term projection. Then it’s the turn of the president. (Pierre Ferracci, Editor’s Note) to lay out his long-term vision for the club. Finally, the coach (Thierry Laurey, Editor’s Note) intervened to talk about the short term, the game project he wanted to set up, the way he wanted to use the potential new recruit. That’s really the last step. We are lucky to have a coach used in Ligue 2, who has already appeared twice (with Gazélec Ajaccio in 2015 and Strasbourg in 2017, Ed). His experience is clearly an argument that matters in the eyes of the players. It weighed on the selection of Pierre-Yves Hamel, who signed with us when he was in great demand. However, we work in a collegial way, with a basic rule: the coach, the president and the sports director all three must agree for us to try to recruit a player. If this is not the case, we will not proceed further, because we risk making a mistake. From now on, we are planning the transfer window to take place in one year, to prepare for the 2023-24 season. With two scenarios: one in Ligue 2, and the other that we will activate if there is an increase in Ligue 1…”
