2

Canon has launched its EOS R7 and we quickly compared it to the Fujifilm X-T4, the benchmark for APS-C hybrids. As a result, the newcomer left only crumbs in the X-T4 that had to bow despite its qualities.

How the pricing table works

After the EOS 7D, APS-C reflex cameras focused on sports, Canon returns with the same philosophy in a mirrorless body, the EOS R7. Comfortably installed, the Fujifilm X-T4 now has to face more modern and sharper competition.

Canon EOS R7: between efficiency and versatility, the right balance

Once again, two different approaches clashed in the ring. On the one hand, Fujifilm plays the nostalgia card with a design that recalls the heyday of film photography with lots of knobs and a chrome finish. On the other hand, Canon remains true to itself by offering a relatively classic and efficient case. This first round was won by Fujifilm offering a more compact and ambitious camera, as well as a better defined viewfinder. Canon defends itself equally with a simple and pleasant model to understand, for lovers of SLR and hybrid.

Far from being a snail, the Fujifilm X-T4 has been overtaken by Canon’s latest addition. The EOS R7, worthy descendant of the EOS 7D Mark II, is very fast, especially in low light where it is twice as fast as its rival. It drives home the point with its highly advanced autofocus, delivering impressive face and eye tracking as well as a super-fast burst. We have detailed the reasons for the superiority of the EOS R7 in a dedicated article that we invite you to consult.

Regarding image quality, the CMOS BSI sensor of the Canon hybrid is better defined than the Fujifilm X-Trans 4, showing 32.5 megapixels against 26.1 Mpx. Both gave excellent shots. The Canon is sharper at low ISO values, the trend reverses when the light fades. However, the victory goes to the Canon EOS R7: its more sophisticated dynamic management makes it possible to recover more information in high and low light.

It’s the same story on the video side where the EOS R7 excels thanks to its uncropped capture and its autofocus is as effective in stills as it is in video. The Fujifilm X-T4 is unbeatable, also offering 4K DCI capture as well as a slow-motion mode at 240 fps in Full HD (against 120 fps “only”).

Although powerful, the Fujifilm X-T4 is forced to bow to the EOS R7. Especially sharp, the Canon case is distinguished by its speed, image quality and its video mode at the top. For its part, the Fujifilm hybrid stands for its own smooth and attractive design.
