Peugeot 408. What do 308 and 3008 owners think?

With the 408, Peugeot invested in a new segment, that of crossovers, and set out to conquer new customers. What about the current owners? Are they ready to buy it? To find out, the editorial staff of L’argus invited three owners of Lion brand models.

Who better than a Peugeot owner to judge… a Peugeot? A few days after the official presentation of the new 408, the editorial staff of The argument took the keys to a crossover in submit it to the judgment of three owners of Lion brand models: Ronan owns a 2018 3008 GT Line, Justine, owns a 2019 Peugeot 308 GT Line and Renaud, owns a 2020 5008 Allure.

A style that pleases

If our three protagonists especially appreciate the design of their respective models, listening to them, the Peugeot 408 does not leave them indifferent. Ronan saw her as “beautiful and aggressive”, Renaud considered her “a bit atypical of her line” while Justine said she was “destabilized” when she looked halfway between a sedan and an SUV. This position, Ronan precisely finds it “interesting”. Renaud is seduced by its “fastback” profile and Justine “worships” the small cat ears and the spoiler which she finds “aggressive and attractive”. Ronan also has a crush on this spoiler that offers a “very racy look” to the 408. With this strong style bias, the crossover should refuse each of them. Now let’s see what our owners think about the interior of this Peugeot.

An abode that surprises

Because we are in the back of the car, that’s where we open the trunk. The tailgate, automatic in this GT version, was appreciated by Renaud who also found that the opening was wide and therefore very appreciated. Justine for her part found this tablet attached to the rear window to be “clever” as were the pull tabs on either side of the uprights that allow the seat backs to be folded down at a moment’s notice. Ronan, who appreciates the low loading threshold, however finds that the trunk does not provide enough volume for his needs. An observation shared by Renaud, especially in this rechargeable hybrid version whose capacity is also reduced by the presence of the Focal audio system. In the back seats, everyone welcomes the emptiness. The significant space offered to the legs and the level of the guard to the roof is suitable for the largest templates.

In the driving position, our three owners said it “couldn’t be out of place”. However, the arrival of a larger touch pad and a more responsive multimedia system is welcome. They also appreciate that the imposing cobra gear lever of the automatic gearbox has been removed by a small lever. This saves storage space but also, and above all, cleans the center console. Note that the 408 will only be offered with an automatic gearbox and gasoline engines: classic or rechargeable hybrid.

So, will they buy or not?

After sitting behind the wheel, it’s time to stock up for our three “beta testers”. Overall, the Peugeot 408 seduces them, especially from a design, accommodation and equipment point of view. Renaud says he was “happily surprised” and Justine found him “very attractive”. However, the young woman found the size of the 408 “excellent” for everyday urban use. “Even if it’s only €2,000 more expensive than the 308*, I’d rather stick with a compact car,” he assured us.

The Peugeot 408 will go on sale in January 2023.

Ronan for his part admitted that, “if he had no inhibitions”, he could allow himself to be tempted. As for Renaud, if he doesn’t have a “big family” (for sure), he will be tempted. So it’s almost a full box for the latest creation from the Peugeot workshops! And you, what do you say about it? To judge, we will meet in January 2023 at the concessions or at the Paris Motor Show, where the crossover will play the stars of the Peugeot stand from October 17 to 23, 2022.
