How the pricing table works

Unveiled in June 2022, the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO is an ideal prime for macro photography. Available in E, Z, RF and L mount respectively for Sony, Nikon, Canon, but also Panasonic, Leica or Sigma, the 90mm is intended for the 24×36 hybrids on the market. To test it, we sent it to our laboratory with the Sony Alpha 7R IV and its 61 megapixel sensor.

Macro photography, a world apart

As we always remind, macro photography should be distinguished from proxiphotography. In fact, a magnification ratio of 1:1 must be reached to be part of this very special category. Beware of manufacturers who do not hesitate to play with words for marketing purposes…

But the macro world does not stop at 1:1 magnification ratio. Generally, macro photography is considered up to 10:1 magnification ratio. Then we quickly fell into the world of photomicrography.

An incredible 2x magnification

To return to the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO, Laowa had the good idea to offer a magnification ratio of up to 2:1, which is quite rare. By placing the focus at the smallest distance to get the greatest magnification. Then it is only 20.5 cm.

Then, you need to achieve the point by moving closer to your subject and adjusting the distance without affecting the focus of the lens. For added accuracy, using a micrometer rail is an excellent choice if possible. In many situations, the use of a tripod is necessary to reach the point without tearing your hair, because it is common to have a zone of sharpness sub-millimeter in macro photography.

A handy label

To help the photographer, Laowa has the good taste to mark the barrel of the lens with the famous distance scale. If it is useful to focus without autofocus or to use techniques related to hyperfocal, it is not very interesting for macro photography. The manufacturer did it right by increasing the markers from the highest reproduction ratio of 2:1 to the lower macro 0.1:1.

Of course, we tested the 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO as usual. In addition to the images from our separate test and the usual photo extracts from our scene, here are some extracts obtained in 2:1 as well as their respective crops in full size.

Details invisible to the eye!

The set is already very impressive, but we want to push the vice a little more with our test device, the Alpha 7R IV (A7R IV). We took a picture of the screen of an iPhone 12 Pro with the highest magnification ratio. Aided by 61 Mpx in the picture box, the sub-pixels of the Oled screen are revealed to us!

To learn more about macro photography, we have published several articles to better understand this fascinating activity that allows us to reveal a small unsuspecting world to our eyes. Of course, the complete test of Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO will soon be available to know its performance in detail.
