Mini’s new electric urban crossover

Mini presents the Aceman concept, its new electric urban crossover. 4.05 m long, it will complete the city car offer in 2023 next to the hatch (Mini 3-door). The latter is also the first production model to receive this new face. It will be officially presented at the beginning of 2023, followed by Aceman and Countryman in the course of the same year.

Its name refers to the late Paceman which was a Countryman 3-door coupé. The Oxford brand takes the idea of the coupe SUV but this time adds two doors and exclusive electric engines. The Mini 3 and 5 doors as well as the Countryman will continue to offer a thermal offer in common.

“Mini’s strategy is based on 3 pillars: building a 100% electric range by 2030, expanding the brand’s presence in Asia and improving the SUV offer”, explained Stefanie Wurst, Director of Mini. With the new Aceman, the manufacturer has ticked all the right boxes.

The Aceman will compete against new competitors of the same breed from Audi, Cupra, and Toyota from 2024. Currently, the unique electric urban SUVs such as the Hyundai Kona, the Opel Mokka-e, the DS3 Crossback E-tense has such a compact format.

This model will also be one of the first of the new electric range produced in the new factory in China in Zhangjiagang that Mini shares with Great Wall through a partnership. Mini produces the same strategy as Smart with #1 and many manufacturers today: European design and made in China.

The Aceman shows a strong silhouette enhanced by a large width (1.99 m), a low height (1.59 m) and imposes 20” rims. The roundness, hallmark of the Mini design, gives way to some creases in the body of the fenders, wheel arches and the bonnet. The hatch will also follow this “stability” trend.

The signature of the rear light is adjustable.

Charismatic design elements such as the Union Jack-shaped rear lights, octagonal grille and front optics have been modernized through extensive LED lighting work. All these elements are customizable. For example, the customer can choose between several signature lights for the rear lights, including the Union Jack, and several colors for the strip that surrounds the grille.

The very minimalist interior goes back to the brand’s origins and follows the rules of its founder, Alec Issigonis. That is, the reduction of design and control requirements. The goal was achieved because the cockpit of the Aceman consists of a steering wheel, a circular touch screen and a center console that is reduced to a minimum. The production model will follow this minimalist trend.

The circular OLED touch screen installed in a floating position is a world first in the automotive industry, reports the manufacturer. It is equipped for the first time in a Mini with Android operating system. It allows creating a link to a custom dashboard. The latter covered with fabric is designed as a sound bar that spans the doors. Its design makes it possible to display images projected from the ceiling accompanied by a good environment to immerse the occupants in a sensory experience, Mini explained. The driver always benefits from a new dashboard.

Light and sound are part of this concept that responds (inside and outside) according to the conditions encountered. For example, when the car is unlocked or when it is charging, a sound and light cutscene will occur.

Moving the start, gear selector and parking brake controls under the dashboard frees up floor storage space between the driver and passenger seats that extends to the rear seats. In it can be installed a cup holder and different storage modules.

Through this concept, Mini aims to offer 5 occupants a happy, pleasant and fun environment. A lot of sounds and light animations are accompanied by a colorful interior trim full of materials. The seats, for example, are covered in “Desigual”-style embossed fabrics that mix textures, colors and reliefs. The steering wheel and door handles are upholstered in velvet. Finally, do not wait for the skin, Aceman will not offer anything.

The space in the back seats seems appropriate for a car of this size, (impossible to enter) and especially in the legs compared to the DS3 Crossback E-Tense. So far, Mini has remained tight-lipped about the number of trunks, engines and battery capacity of its production model. One thing is certain, the capacity is greater than the current Cooper SE (32.6 kWh). Aceman’s design, designed for electrics, will allow the batteries to be placed on the floor, therefore greater capacity. It is estimated to be 50 kWh, the gross capacity of the pack that will equip the Aceman.

The Mini Aceman concept will make its first public appearance on August 23 at the Gamescom 2022 exhibition dedicated to video games, which will be held in Cologne.
