Guide: What are the best ultra-portable waterproof speakers? July 2022

Whether green, yellow, red or blue, the ultra-portable speaker has become an important ally in many cases. However, some of the situations may be more severe than others, especially due to the presence of dust, sand or the proximity of a water point. In a construction site, in the bathroom, kitchen, garden, on the beach or near the swimming pool, all these are examples that hardly lend themselves to all the portable speakers on the market. That’s why we offer you this buying guide to find out what you’re looking for among the best ultra-portable waterproof Bluetooth speakers.

Water and dust resistance is measured using the protection index (also called IP). This index consists of two numbers: the first indicates the level of dust resistance (from X to 6) and the second reveals the level of protection against water penetration (from X to 9). Thus, an IPX4 index indicates no protection against dust and resistance against splashing water. The IP67 index indicates total protection against dust and resistance against the effects of temporary immersion up to 1 m deep for 30 min. The speakers in this buying guide meet the watertightness criterion, with at least IPX7 certification.

Strong points

  • Really amazing sound performance.
  • Amazing bass reproduction.
  • Powerful, his.
  • Complete orders.
  • Resistive.

Weak points

  • Expressed directness, speaker without stance.
  • No mini jack.
  • Average autonomy.

With the Soundlink Micro, Bose has once again demonstrated all its knowledge about bass and power in an indoor volume. The ergonomics do not lag behind, offering complete controls and excellent resistance. Be careful though: missing one jack can chill more than one!

How the pricing table works

Strong points

  • Rich and beautiful sound signature at moderate volume.
  • Elegant and durable design (IP67 certified).
  • Generous autonomy.
  • Very easy management, complete controls, multipoint Bluetooth.

Weak points

  • The sharp and lively appearance is enhanced by highlighting the high mids and highs.
  • Plenty of power reserve, but not usable.
  • No mini-jack input.
  • Less useful Marshall Bluetooth smartphone app.

For a first draft on the market of ultra-portable speakers, the Willen surprised by the beauty of its design, its generous autonomy, but also the overflowing energy it has. However, we regret that this great power cannot be taken advantage of, otherwise the listening experience would be very poor.

Strong points

  • Surprisingly rich and balanced sound reproduction considering its size.
  • Outstanding build quality and finish.
  • Robust design, waterproof (IP67).
  • The carabiner, still practical.
  • Quick and easy handling.

Weak points

  • The sibilance traces are more or less marked depending on the listening conditions.
  • Significant power reserve, strongly limited by distortion and pumping effects.
  • No mini-jack input, no multipoint Bluetooth connection.
  • Still no additional functionality.

Still as practical, strong, durable and easy to use, the fourth version of Clip surprises with its improvement in terms of sound reproduction. If some exceptional references are ahead of it, the gap it widens on this last point with most speakers of its size remains remarkable. If you don’t mind missing a mini-jack input, the JBL Clip 4 is positioned as an ultraportable speaker of choice.

How the pricing table works

Strong points

  • Deep bass and well transcribed.
  • Omnidirectional sound distribution.
  • Long battery life (16 hours at moderate volume).
  • Good build quality and durability.
  • Stereo pairing of two SRS-XB13s is possible.

Weak points

  • Apparent lack of precision in the high-mids/treble.
  • No mini-jack input, no multipoint functionality.

The SRS-XB13 is a great spare speaker that will delight the most adventurous and less fortunate to add sound to a small room such as a bedroom, bathroom, or even an outdoor area near the swimming pool. In terms of sound performance, it’s hard for us to recommend it against a Go 3 or a JBL Clip 4, which are more convincing. The XB13, however, has small practical arguments that cannot be neglected to put forward: greater autonomy, slightly more complete controls and the possibility of connecting two identical stereo speakers.

The third version of JBL Go marks a real evolution compared to the previous model. The Go 3 is full of surprises in terms of its durability and its sound performance, more than respectable for an ultraportable speaker. If it is not completely compared to our absolute reference, the Bose Soundlink Micro, it is undoubtedly positioned as the best value for money.

Thanks to its extremely compact dimensions, the good size / power ratio and its moderate price, the Go was a surprising success in 2016. The Go 2, now waterproof, more resistant and aesthetic , which offers a better controlled and more powerful sound performance, therefore has all the properties to, in turn, attract fans of nomadic listening.
