Among the considered solutions, restricting the flow of goods is clearly unsustainable and endangers the country’s economy. Increasing the size and number of roads has detrimental consequences on the environment and the living environment which is very dear to the peaceful residents. And if in the end the solution is not on the ground or in the air, but underground?

Switzerland launches Operation Cargo Sous Terrain

After studying all the solutions, the length, the width and the width, it was finally the project baptized “Cargo Sous Terrain” (CST) that was retained. It consists of digging and creating an ambitious and extensive underground network of several hundred kilometerswhich has many branches, between the lakes of Constance, located at the northeastern end of the country, and Geneva, located in the southwest, on the border of France.

The project, which will start in August this year, will end in… 2045. The first section, which is approximately 70 km long, will run from the small town of Härkingen-Niederbipp to Zurich and should be operational in 2031, if there are no failures.

For this first 70 km section alone, including the logistics and hardware part, but also all the software part as well as the machines, it should cost at least 3 billion Swiss francs (3.05 billion euros) . Already a significant amount, but far from the total cost of the operation estimated, see your eyes, at… 30,000 million (yes yes, thirty thousand million!) Swiss francs (€30,500 million). An amount that is fully financed by the market itself as well as by the private sector.

Without going into too many technical details, the Cargo Sous Terrain project will connect depot centers with each other for large goods, but also with urban centers where people who deliver there are light electric vehicles capable of delivering to private homes.

Everything will be automated with ecological and electric vehicles, so without a driver, moving on the tracks and in the three-lane tunnel at a speed of 30 km / h. 100% of the energy will come from renewable sources and it will be possible to move furniture and materials as well as fresh products.

Although the project is a titanic scale, its creators believe in that it will make it possible to reduce heavy vehicle traffic on motorways by more than 40%, while significantly reducing the level of pollution and noise pollution. Who knows, maybe other countries will follow?
