During his keynote address at EthCC this week, Vitalik Buterin outlined his vision for the future of Ethereum after The Merge, the move to proof of stake (PoS). The famous smart contract blockchain should go through successive updates, which should bring it to the capacity of 100,000 transactions per second.
Vitalik Buterin clarified the Ethereum roadmap
When fifth edition of the EthCC conferenceheld this week in Paris, Vitalik Buterinthe founder of Ethereum, took the stage to outline the next steps in the evolution of the network.
As announced recently, the famous Mergewhich will mark the transition from a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus, will take place on September 19. The Merger should reduce network energy consumption by 99%. But according to Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum is only at 55% of its development, when this step is completed. Other major projects, which we will detail, will take place later:
- The Flood;
- The Hill;
- The Cleansing;
- The Flood.
Ethereum Upgrade Map
The Surge, which will be the next big step after The Merge, the implementation of sharding can be seen. It should arrive in 2023 and contain a fragmentation of operations on the network. One can illustrate this by comparing the update with the advent of Taylorism in industry at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Ethereum will be divided into fragments (or fractions), and each of them will be given a specific action the smooth running of consensus. Like a production line in a factory, this horizontal cutting increases productivity. This productivity is symbolized here by the number of transactions per second.
it fragments then relay their information to the main channel, the Beacon Chainto anchor blocks in the blockchain.

The Verge, The Purge and The Splurge, are three more distant events
Without going into great technical details, Verge will let you reduce block size. At the same time, validators have less data to store. In fact it is an optimization of Merkle trees, the mathematical concept that allows containing information in a block of a cryptographic hashes.
These new, more powerful functions are called “Verkle trees”. With less storage required, it becomes “simpler” to be a validator, which improves decentralization.
As a continuation of this development, The Purge is allowed to clean the blockchain of all its redundant data. It also helps to reduce the storage space required by validators.
All these measures should lead to a serious reduction in network congestion and these projections Vitalik Buterin based himself on the prediction of an Ethereum in 100,000 transactions per second. Finally, The Splurge will contain a continuous improvement over all previous updates. This last round may also possibly prove that the engine runs perfectly.
Of course, if The Merge is so close, others are further away. However, these are the necessary steps to build awesome technological revolution what is Ethereum.
