Nathalie and Cathy, her two best friends, accompanied Charlotte Valandrey to the end and talked to us between laughter and tears.
Nathalie, tall vine with light brown hair, five years younger than him, mother of two children, met Charlotte in her hometown of Pléneuf-Val-André about thirty years ago. “I was 18 years old when I met his intense blue gaze for the first time on the sands of Val-André, he remembers. I don’t understand why that beautiful girl doesn’t have a boyfriend. One summer night, as the sun went down, Charlotte told me her terrible secret, her HIV status. She is a very honest woman. With the boys, if one of them pleases him, he himself reveals his illness to him. But that one word was enough to scare them. I understand how important love is for my friend. It was her meeting with Arthur Lecaisne, and above all the birth of her daughter, Tara, who is now 22 years old, filled this gap. Tara is the miracle of his life, his sunshine, his reason for being born. She is strong, vulnerable and brave just like her mother. He did not leave his mother’s side during his hospitalization.

Today, June 13, when her doctor told her that her graft had arrived, Charlotte was beautiful, happy and joyful. The next day, the day of his surgery, and before he went to the operating room, we talked on the phone around 5:30 in the morning. He asked me to send him this famous photo of poppies that I had made and that he loved so much, to share with his subscribers. Then everything came together very quickly. His family contacted his friends on July 12 to say goodbye. I kissed him and whispered that I am Nath that I love him. I was there for him, he was there for me.
Waited a year, for Charlotte it was a century
Cathy, on the other hand, is a fan of the actress. Then their relationship turned into friendship. Mother of three children, she lives in Annecy and runs a bed and breakfast. This tall brunette with a strong character never “let go”. “During and after the imprisonment, our relationship became stronger. He even started making trees of life to escape. We talked until 2 or 3 in the morning to cheer him up. Because he is evil. He stopped “Tomorrow we are”. He suffered a lot. He always told me: “But what should I do?” Even his album, which he was very proud of, was not ultimately successful… His duet with Marc Lavoine did not go unnoticed. He is desperate. He recently released “Reconcile with yourself”, his latest book. He contacted to do “Low the masks” in 2023.
The wait was a year, for Charlotte, it was a century. In 2021, he will not be so good. We rented a cottage with Fabienne and Béa so she wouldn’t have to think about things. We ride bikes, we dance. But since the end of the series, concerts, theater, he only thought about returning to the cinema. However, even the cinema did not like him anymore. It was cruel… They preferred younger, thinner actresses. Charlotte did not accept her body deformed by drugs. He took the stomach. He felt bad about himself and that made him even weaker. His fans supported him, gave him gifts. And on the day he received his transplant, he wanted to say thank you very much…
We attended a show in February 2022 and we got Covid. Charlotte is weak, coughing, out of breath after 100 meters. I am very worried. He went to the emergency room. He didn’t plan anything for Christmas that year. I got him a train ticket to spend the holidays with his father, in Le Val. His dad sings in the church choir. He was happy to see her like this. In March, I took him to Orléans to attend a concert by Julien Doré. He was tired. And at night, before going to sleep, he whispered to me: “If I have a heart attack tonight, I won’t feel it.”
He told his father, his sister, his daughter that he did not want the disrespect of the treatment if the transplant was not taken.
In May, he spent a few days with his father. The other day, he called us, along with Fabienne, and told us: “I don’t feel well. I will have a big suitcase. Cathy, can you pick me up in Paris and let’s go straight to the emergency room?” I returned to Annecy on May 15, he called me back with Tara, who had to take her to the emergency room again. And shortly after, he contracted staphylococcus aureus in his arm, which was operated on. One day, he said to me: “I am not afraid of the transplant, but of its results. If I die during the operation, I die.” I reassured him, I kissed him on the forehead, on the hair, on the cheek, and I told him: “I love you. Stop.” He knew he could trust me, until the end. He was so scared! I promised him to take him to London for his 54th birthday, because he didn’t know this city.
On June 24, his family allowed me to see him, after his transplant. A shock for me! He was intubated, his eyes were awake and looking at me. He didn’t know me and said, “I don’t want to be hooked up. I hope my heart will beat again.” With the permission of the doctors, I put “We”, by Julien Doré, then Clara Luciani. He was shaking his head, as if he wanted to dance, as if he wanted to sing. I was angry.
On July 12, Paule, the intermediary between his family and his friends, called me and told me that his father, his daughter, Tara, and his sister, Aude, had allowed us, with said Fabienne, to go and speak to him again. He was sleeping. So pale, so weak. We talked, we told her that we love her so much, we caressed her gently, reminding her of our happy memories together. He told his dad, his brother, his daughter that he didn’t want aggressive therapy if the transplant didn’t work. He will be with his mother, in heaven.”
