Saints Row tells the story of The Boss and the Saints gang. There’s nothing new on the horizon you tell me and you’d be right, because The Saints Row 2022 version is actually a pure and simple reboot of the franchise by Volition studios. Say goodbye to The Boss who became, among other things, the President of the United States and a superhero in Saints Row IV, and make way for a new protagonist in your image… or not for that matter. Always desperate to pay the rent, our hero and his roommates continue to skim Santo Ileso, even if it means making more enemies along the way. It must be said that the town is surrounded by three gangs – Los Panteros, The Marshall and The Idols – come rain or shine. Following a combination of circumstances, a lot of bad luck and even more bad faith, The Boss, Eli, Neenah and Kevin decide to strike out on their own and form the Saints gang with the main goal of revenge and conquering the city by all means.

The Saints Row saga took the heavy artillery with this reboot, and landed on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, but also on old generation consoles with style. Volunteer studios were developed for the occasion a new engine designed for this open-world action-adventure game. From a purely technical point of view, the title published by Deep Silver provides the requirements. The framerate is stable and guarantees the best gaming comfort, and also the same resolution that complies with current standards. It should be specified that Saints Row sometimes suffers from the relative distance of drawing, clipping, and tight animations. For others, the title offers players a sound and light show worthy of the name with partially destructible environments, explosive vehicles and bright visual effects. The artistic direction is halfway between realism and cartoon influences breathes a pulp side of the epic, and highlights the escapades of a The Boss more excited and determined than ever. Saints Row has no ambition to be a new technical standard, but tries to do it right. Small dishes are placed on large ones, sometimes in an awkward way.

Saints Row: More than GTA?

Saints Row is an open-world third-person shooter. So players freely progress in Santo Ileso, and complete various missions to advance the plot and improve The Boss. Volition’s game here recites the formula of fully open world which never dared to go off-road, and of which GTA V and Red Dead Redemption II are proud representatives. The adventure is not surprisingly taken in the air of urban guerrilla warfare with the sequences of nervous actions that help anything 100% imagined. it farts in all directions and especially out of time in constantly changing situations. Fortunately, the Saints have the answer, and can count on a devastating arsenal to master, skills to unlock and cars to buy.

Faced with three other gangs, law enforcement and a more insidious bestiary, The Boss and his allies repeatedly prove their supremacy on the streets of Santo Ileso. However, their epic was not easy. Rushing to the pile without thinking, death often points at the tip of its nose. The confrontations are meant to be dynamic, a little tactical, and above all fun from the first exchanges, although rough at times. Volition relies entirely on arcade gameplay during gunfights and chases, and this state of mind is evident throughout the game. Special mention of weightless moments in a Wingsuit, Mad Max-style convoy attacks and mechanized rides. This reboot begins a new era for Saints, and logically wants to be accessible to as many people as possible. To do this, it has 5 levels of difficulty, just to live an adventure always on the wire regardless of your player profile.

Saints Row: More than GTA?

Saints Row does not shine either in its scenario, or in its gameplay that does not deserve anything, but turns out to be elementary. There is no sequence shot that installs the story. There are no cinematic-gameplay transitions that smooth out the experience. The narrative is innovative on the left, which doesn’t stop Volition’s game from thinking big. The life of The Boss is clearly worth the detour, controller in hand. The very structure of the game connects the story to a series of main missions or not, sometimes a few hours apart, resulting in a completely disjointed story. The strength of a Grand Theft Auto lies in this fragile balance between a sense of total freedom and a scripted campaign with great potential, a true nod to the 7th Art.

With Saints Row, the story is lost to allow the gaming experience to be fully expressed and not the other way around, which dampens the cinematographic impulses at work. However, fans of The Boss and his gang are looking forward to the franchise in a completely different register, that of humor. In this domain, the screenwriters spread schoolboy jokes, swing salty turbo punchlines and take risks that shock the puritans. And the daring of Saints Row dares everything and its opposite. Granted, this reboot is more down to earth than its predecessors, but there’s no denying its origins. In contrast, the Saints go through the faults of our contemporary societies with a flamethrower with this sad tone that characterizes the saga. Even better, The Boss gang has not neglected any community of players in 2022.

Saints Row: More than GTA?

Saints Row has nothing to be ashamed of when compared to other games in the genre. The size of the map, the number of weapons and vehicles, the lifespan and more. important data that confirms the ambitions of the studios in charge of development. Santo Ileso is obviously not the biggest open world ever made, but it’s more than intended to be dense. In terms of activities, there is a lot to do between the main missions, the secondary quests, the random encounters, the mysteries scattered within the 9 districts that make up the city, the businesses that get, etc. However, be careful not to fall into the trap of having the same goals. The volume can easily be taken in the air to copy-paste and make the experience (again) again and again.

Speaking of customization, Saints Row sees things big, and that’s saying something with tons of weapons of all kinds to modify and more than 80 fully customizable cars to collect. . The adventure begins with the creation of an avatar, and the level options that the Volition title clearly does not mock the world. The style also goes through the deterioration, and again the opportunities to create a unique The Boss are legion to the point of spending long minutes in the character editor. The fact of not imposing a gender is welcome. A hero, a hero, both or neither, in Saints Row is possible. The game is also affected by different skills that can be unlocked as the adventure progresses, just to survive on the road. To finish, Saints Row is cross-play and fully playable in two-player co-op.

Saints Row: More than GTA?

Saints Row can be a reliable alternative to GTA. In any case, this is the first 4 hours spent in the game leads us to think. See you on August 23, 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series to get to the bottom of it.
