Can JVC’s Air Purifier Make Our Cars Breathe Better Without Going on Vacation?

Crossovers, large derelicts, traffic jams, tunnels, heat waves and… pollution. The traditional infernal cocktail can undoubtedly be used without moderation on the way to the summer vacation in our cars. To take care of this, JVC launched its KS-AP320, a nomadic air purifier dedicated to the living quarters of our cars. What is it worth? “20 Minutes” turned on the ignition to test it.

The size of a portable speaker

Don’t make the mistake of buying the KS-AP320 from JVC. Despite its appearance, it is not a Bluetooth speaker, but a nomadic air purifier! It is not the first of its kind, there are different ones on the market, but apart from LG for the home, this is the first time that a manufacturer of consumer electronics has entered the atypical market of portable purifiers. . Needless to say, JVC is a specialist in on-board products (such as car radios, car speakers, etc.).

The KS-AP320 is a small-sized piece of equipment (6.6 cm in diameter for 18 cm in length and 360 grams). In particular, it is designed to be placed in a cup holder like many cars. Its cylinder, made of aluminum, is immersed in six cells that absorb air to reject it, when filtered, on the surface of the device. There is a touch control panel to adjust the speed of the filter on two levels, but also to know, thanks to a double LCD display, the temperature of the environment and the level of humidity. The KS-AP320 plugs into a lighter socket, an adapter provided.

Three indicators of air quality

Its use is very young. When running, the purifier continues to suck in air and expel it. A bright LED ring around the ventilation grille offers an accurate indication of the level of air quality. Green, healthy air; blue, it is of average quality; red, it’s obviously dirty. A simple test by blowing cigarette smoke into the device shows its responsiveness: the glowing ring immediately turns red!

The filter process used by JVC is photocatalysis. A particle filter will first neutralize dust and pollen. It needs to be replaced almost every six months (sold for less than 20 euros). A catalyst then neutralizes bacteria, odors and fine particles. By disassembling the device, we saw that JCV used 6 small UV-A LEDs for it.

Efficient with perfect relevance

How to judge the effectiveness of this purifier that we have tested in many car trips? It’s hard to say. First, because a car already has its own filter for its internal ventilation system. It prevents the exhaust gas particles in the air from invading the passenger compartment (remember to change it every 20,000 kilometers!).

Then, because we can only rely on the bright LED indicator of the KS-AP320 to know the air quality in the environment. And if it’s green next to the driver (as it usually is during our tests), does that mean the kids sitting in the back seat have the same air quality? ? It’s a shame that JVC doesn’t communicate the amount of air its purifier can produce, or when… And don’t forget that the best way to purify the air in a car is, like houses with window, open. windows are always…

There remains a tool to use, of course, with the windows closed. Undoubtedly one can imagine a relevant use during long night journeys in a car, but also under a tunnel with heavy traffic jams, or even in a car where a passenger is sick, or with a child who wants to be protected. Also a good point: the KS-AP320 removes unpleasant odors from the cabin. Which can also be practical when traveling with a pet.
